Well first off I’d recommend anything from the Protocol series. The Protocol series o scenarios are a bunch of separate standlone single session games designed for you to be able to pick up and start playing within ten minutes. While the scenarios are all different the underlying framework (or Protocol, if you will) always remains the same so you eventually become familiar with it after a few sessions. In Protocol scenarios everyone is a player but everyone is also a GM, players taking it in turns to host/GM/supervise scenes and everyone gets a fair chance at being in the spotlight. They play as a series of scenes that do not need to flow directly from one to another, rather like short shifting scenes in a tv series. They are published by Post World Games and can easily be picked up in pdf form.

Ironsworn by Shawn Tomkin is a wonderful dark age viking inspired game in which brave individuals swear iron oaths. “I will find the man who slew my father and get my revenge,” “I will climb that mountain,” “I will get my pig back from the greedy fellow who stole it” etc. The game is designed to have three different play modes. The usual guided method with one player acting as GM is not the default. Instead the other two options (multiple players but nobody is the GM or solo play) are the default methods intended with a rather robust solo play option. The conflict resolution system falls into three possible outcomes. Success, Complications and Failure. Success and Failure and obvious but when it comes to complications let’s say I believe I have found the man who slew my father and am about to exact my revenge and as I do so I roll a complication. I discover that the victim of my would be revenge was acting on another’s behalf. Yes. He slew my father but he was working for an evil merchant who wanted to steal our land to build a warehouse on to hold his excess stock. Or I discover that he only slew my father because he was in love with my sister and our father would never allow the marriage so it was my sister who persuaded him to do the foul deed. This is even more convincing if I originally believed my sister to have been carried off by the murder but then, after defeating him I discover they eloped together and that she’s a rather more nasty piece of work than I originally imagined.

Ironsworn is a great roleplaying game and, rather more importantly, the pdf is absolutely free! What madness is that? I highly recommend you go and look it up. You might have a very good time :).
