Let’s Play Star Wars: Legion – Skirmish Rules
December 11, 2019 by avernos
Gerry and Justin throw down their allegiances to each side of the Force for a game of Star Wars: Legion.
This isn't the regular wargame from Fantasy Flight though as they've decided to use the recently released skirmish rules to see how that works out on the tabletop. With Justin as the Empire and Gerry as the Rebels we soon find out who is strong with the Force this day.
Have you been trying out the new skirmish rules? What do you think?

Justin `Alpha Strike’ straight off at the 500pt limit, “Is 502 pts ok…?”
It’s a limit for a reason :p
Though when Justin didn’t roll red defence dice it doesn’t really matter…
I gave this starter set to 12 year olds and they like it, but they still favor the elves and dragons and barbarians of the Warlords of Erehwon…one even favors Hail Caesar (like his grandfather). This skirmish game really moves along. I love the old Star Wars theme, but I think I favor the Firelock games of Blood and Plunder and Blood and Valor myself. You lads have played them all…what do you like the most?
that’s a tough question, Warlords of Erewhon is probably a close section to star wars as far as fantasy skirmish games go, although I’ve got Vanguard from Mantic to play as well. Historic games… neither are periods I would play skirmish games in, but they’re good games, I think I’d probably go Hail Caesar although you should have a look at warmaster ancients as the precursor to HC and it has some interesting things you could add
Hail Caesar can be a chore building proper armies for unless you like building and painting historical units…I don’t mind…but both HC and WoE have been a surprising lot of fun, especially for my grandsons. It only took one game for the 12 year old to get the importance maintaining battle lines and support and using cavalry and skirmishers for flanks and screens. I was going to give Vanguard a shot and I really fancy the Northern Alliance, but getting ready for the upcoming Clash of Spears has now impinged in my childlike attention span…
you’ll enjoy Clash, and you could even use it with HC to do longer campaigns
Not a Legion player but that looked a good downscaling of the rules.
The rules aren’t really downscaled. Only the max points and army organisation. All other rules still apply (unless the battle cards say something different ;))
I’ve had my 2nd game of skirmish tonight…. and got my ass handed to me XD
Ok, this is going to be a long one. Do not take it to serious! Image a shouty German with a beer in his hand in front of the telly yelling at the screen: Turn 1 Snowtroopers have “Steady: After you perform a move action, you may perform a free ranged attack action.” I’d bet that was range 3 to the dirty rebels! Also: Vader with no Sabre Throw? Buuuuh! 😉 Side note in the speeders: the one looking back is *not* the unit leader. At least not as per building instructions page 5 of the manual. Carry on. (Oh… Read more »
The only action that can be performed more than once is Move ?
True, my bad. It was late, I was tired 😉
we forgive you. 😉
Thanks for the refresher I’ve not had the game on the table since September.
I don’t…
Think I noticed another one. When a Jedi/Sith uses a dodge token (Vader in this instance), they gain ‘deflect’ which adds surge to their save roll.
a great game video on a fabulous table.
My issue is that at 500 points; you need to spend points on dice. The firepower gerry put out made so many hits that when you save(if you do) that more deadly just in looks like he hardly saved….oops that is fate. Still; another great let’s play. And for forgetting rules; also guilty as charged.
Looked like you had a fun time, guys even as @sundancer mentioned you made some mistakes (i was to a tournament, so i know some of them ) ;D
Another thing is, it think that good old darth have been reduced in points, in faq, there is also some brilliant army builders out there, I like this https://tabletopadmiral.com/legion/ .
oh and it did not go all to well at the tournement… 12 out 12 ;D but it was fun. And i really learned concept of the rules.
You did as well as I did! XD
I personally like the Battlescribe Rooster Editor more mainly because it’s multi system.
Thanks @sundancer for the heads up on ‘Battlescribe Rooster Edititor’!
I checked that out and really like it. It’s great having one program for multiple games systems. ???
10 minutes in and Gerry is proving how to be an effective terrorist while Justin would presumably being choked by Vader for this performance.
I can’t wait to the weekend to get my grubby hands on these minis
I think at this points level you either take a big leader and pad with basic squads, or go for the low points commanders and take one or two other shinies like an operative. You can’t afford both luxuries!
I haven’t played that many games yet to judge, what do people feel is the largest game you would host on a 3×3 using the skirmish rules? (Ignoring whatever FFG might say themselves)
hello all, sorry to be asking this here, but I’m confused by the command cards and wasn’t able to find a thread on the forums, when a card says “trooper” and another says “unit” what is the difference??,
again apologies for asking here
