    Square bases have four edges.

Round bases have an infinite number of edges as each degree of a circle can be divided up an infinite number of times.

It therefore follows that infinity is greater than four, thus round bases are superior to square bases.

I hope you’re not driving under the influence of whatever class A you must be taking for that opinion.

square bases have 4 points …

you can use these to stab your cheating opponents

round bases have zero pointy bits, thereby robbing you of the satisfaction of stabbing a cheater.

    😉

The ideal base is one that not only provides a stable surface for the model, also acts as an identifier of unit specific features.
    Example :

    – square base  : unit can move in formation

    – round base : unit is a skirmisher and can not use formations

Round basses can be weighted using coins – while square coins are difficult to come by.

The title says it all. Correct. Let’s all just move on.

@avernos I’m neither under the influence nor driving. However your concern is appreciated.

Now please hold still while my round base rolls over you.

Hexagon bases are superior to both round and square bases. WH 40k Rogue Trader originally used hexagon bases. Since RT was the best iteration of 40k, ext post acto, hex bases are better than round. I won’t even dignify square bases by proving they are the worst. It’s self evident.

@limburger, see my reply to avernos, your four corned stabby base is no match for a rolling base.

@koraski a hex base is better than a square base. By 2.  But a round base is infinite and thus is infinitely better than both square and hex bases.

Ahhh but where do round “lipped” bases stand in your heresy? Ofc the issue is that you can’t rank up round bases (which you can with square ones, AND you can still play skirmish games with square bases), thus your logic is fatally flawed….

….plus “infinite” is a pretty big number and hard to count, whereas four is easier (you’ll notice things like this as you get older) 😀

And a ranked up formation of historical pikemen with wire pikes is probably the most dangerous thing in the wargamers arsenal forming a defence if your opponent should “lunge” for you from across the table when you manage that hail mary dice roll and start doing a Lloyd style “Jammy Dance” (not seen him do that in a long while)

@phaidknott I submit your assertion that square bases are necessary for rank & flank is fatally flawed. Here’s why.

Soldiers aren’t square. In fact, they are roundish at almost every point, so squaring them up is virtually impossible as many an NCO can tell you.

In fact, ragged lines are far more common and realistic. Please observe re-enactors attempting maneuvers on anything other than parade grounds.

No, I submit ragged is realism.

But should your OCD overcome you, sabot trays are quite acceptable. And have the added bonus of having a French word with a dual meaning, at least one of wish is distinctly military related. (I’m referring to Sabot rounds, not sabot as in the shoe, though shoes are of course important for armies.)

As for lipped bases? However the mood strikes you.

And yes, I routinely replace my plastic spears with steel spears. Though the number of blood lettings seem decidedly one sided with many an own goal result.

Base shapes are irrelevant as they can be adapted, grouped and replaced.

    Base material is the key.

And all bases should be metal (like all good things are)

It’s keeps the tiny fighting men and women upright, makes them feel better over all and when they fall down they will land on their feet most of the time thus saving the paintjob.

    Do metal bases!

Irregular non-determined shapes for scenic bases. Done.

Even with four or five irregular MDF scenic bases sellotaped to your front, I still feel my ranked pikemen on SQUARE bases will stop a lunge across that table as I do my “Jammy Dance” 😛
