The wall was breached within hours with the Germans doing the best they could with what they had, and managed to prevent the allies from accomplishing their respective first day missions. The fact that many of the more senior commanders and veteran officers were not present on the day, even Rommel who was on leave, further hampered the German defence.
However, later the 21st panzer division would seize the city of Caen and further scupper the allied advance into occupied France.
