Arrayed against the Allied invasion was thousands of German infantry with huge coastal guns (some capable of targeting Britain's coast) artillery batteries, mortars and numerous machine gun nests. The Nazis however were not as prepared as they could have been despite the plans from Hitler's favourite, Ernest Rommel. The war in Italy and against the Russians on the eastern front had depleted the German's capabilities at defending the wall effectively.
