About the Project
For two and a half decades I've been in the wargaming hobby. Collecting, building, converting, and gaming. But very rarely painting. Sadly a crippling fear of paintbrushes and paint pots has meant that while I've bought and built plenty of models the fear of mucking up my stuff has meant I can count on one hand the number of models I've painted to completion, and I wouldn't even need to use all my fingers. Well I've decided to change, pick up the paint brush and fight through the fear to very end. This project log is to showcase this process.

Don't ask me where it's from, I've no idea. It was clearly old school, pre slotta and some poorly molded areas, but I loved it nontheless.
Life happens and gets in the way, but here I am back once again plugging away at the “backlog”. To be truthful I’d completed this towards the end of last year but have only got near the internet with it now. It was fun playing with colours, and creating such a different base locale. In addition to liven up the sculpt a bit I had a go at some simple freehand “tribal” tattooing. I thought for a brief second that I should check how to actually do tattoos, maybe find an online tutorial perhaps . . . I didn’t. Just going at it blind I think it worked out ok. Dark blue on light blue skin probably helped out, but getting the darker outline was to me key to getting the look of the thing right. Fingers crossed the next completed models will be done a bit quicker perhaps.
3 more and I've hit 30.
Sticking with another simple paint scheme, this time on some mushroom men. What I did want to have a crack at was the crackle paint, I've had mixed results in the past but I was more than happy this time round.

I picked up these two at the begining of the year, no use for them but having had fun watching the Apes reboot trilogy of recent years I fancied having a go at these when I saw them.
It was a fairly easy painting process, multiple layers of drybrushing to build up the colour, bits of blue, bits of grey, lighter blues for the child, white for the parent, and then a black drybrush for the parents fur to tone it down a little. Not the greatest paint job certainly, but a fun little project nonetheless.
25, and we're back on a little bit of a roll!
I joked with a friend that for my next trick I would be able to get Archaon built and painted in a weekend. Well here he is. And after having my covid shot too so I was one handed all weekend as my arm was dead and unliftable for the best part of a week. at 25 I'm now pretty much at 1 model complete to a standard I'm happy about for every year I've been in the Hobby, guess the next landmark moment will be one for every year on the planet?

Had a few of these kicking about, finally decided to finish these two off. I started these after I’d just moved, the reason they have such a simple scheme is I only had a half dozen paints. Can’t remember all the details, I think the blue was a 5 stage jobby, the metal two, paint limitations. It was those limitations, and the resultant simplistic paint job that make me love them all the more, red skin? Kind of looks like he’s wearing leather gloves.
And Finally, Model 22.
It's been a while, but at long last I return paint brush in hand!Once more to the prep my friends.
Bit more prepping on models that have been sat unloved (well unpainted at least as they were always loved) for far too long. Once again a much younger me threw green suff at this guy so for the sake of my rose tinted glasses I don't want to remove it. I have pulled off some of the rougher bits but overall he's no staying as he is.Model 21!! . . . . of still too many to count completed.
It never ceases to make me sad that however much time I spent touching up the stripey pants to get them to look good, as soon as you put the cmera lense to look through it suddenly looks a little rough.
Parts of this guy were painted over 8 years ago so rather than going over them now I decided to leave them as they were and just foccus on some of the bigger parts. Details in places on this figure were so shallow that the paint layer already there was obscuring the part, best just to make the best of it and move on.
I also wanted to keep the cape, I did the orange way back when but my partner played around with the little bit of freehand kind of flame effecct on the hood so I wanted it to stay. the stripey trews are new though, I'm pleased with them in spite of the camera.A small contribution, Model 20.
The reason for painting this guy was amusement. In his former life he was a banner topper but as soon as I saw him I thought it would be great to put him on his own base. Also in case you were wondering Yes he has got three stages of highlighting despite only being a couple of mil high.

One of the first AoS figures I bought, as apposed to Fantasy Battles refugees. It was rather a simple paint scheme but I like it, even with all the mistakes I made touching the brush against a completed part. I also had a go at blending the base topper into my cork bases, I think it worked a little what do you think?Model 18 of too many to count completed.
Mr Otter, possibly my fvourite mini in my collection based on the fact he was the first non GW mini I ever bought. I have no idea where he's from though if anyone could identify him I would be greatfull.
A little prep more.
A little more prep work today. This Celtos figure has a hood on it I made while playing around with greenstuff over 15 years ago. It’s a bit rough, and doesn’t really match the style of the mini but for the sake of nostalgia I chose to keep it. Little bit of basework here too, I have until recently been using the underside of a scrap of textured plastic to make cobbles, these don’t always turn out great so I decided to have a go at sculpting a pattern on the base. It’s not the best example out there but I kind of like it, I think I’ll start to transition across to this method for future fantasy urban miniatures.
Prep for the Prep God?
Firstly anyone know who this guy is? No idea where he came from . . . Like the last model I was unhappy with the base as it was, another integral to the cast, for some odd reason it was Oval . . . anyway he's on a square now like proppa mini.
Spent a bit of time building up the sides of the base with greenstuff like the last model.Preparing to fail is . . . wait what?
In the process of prepping some more models for the paint table.
This guy came with a thick resin integral base, but it was rather thin so I decided to put him on a slotta, sculpting up the sides so it looks like it's a part of the basing.11 to 17 now done.
I have rather a lot of Goblins kicking about, painted this bunch a couple at a time but any more at once and I'd be pulling my hair out, with that in mind I fear it may take me an age to finish all that I own.Well this was a nice surprise to wake up to on Sunday

10 felt like a significant number so I felt like painting something a little bit special, I present my confrontation troll.
Taken the best part of this week to get him done, now on to the next 10 . . . Model 8 and 9 of too many to count completed.
In sympathy for Ben and his little pink tails that featured in a humurous episode of backstage a few weeks ago I thought I'd cpaint up a couple of Bouncing Pink Balls to go alongside them.
I really love these old metal squigs, I'm not sure they've ever been equalled.
One thing I'm struggling with is photography, I really think the photo is losing something when I come to do this stage, any advice people could give would be appreciated.Model Zero, (7) the first time I ever painted a model from start to finish.
4 years ago I painted up this guy, given that this has become a growing log of all my completed models I felt I should put him in here, I definitely think I've finally turned a corner looking back. This was the only model I painted to conclusion in 2016, I didn't paint for the next two years, 2019 I did 2, this year 4 in less than a month!!Model 6 of too many to count completed, now with added Lloyd shot.
Well this paint train keeps rolling, ony a couple of models more and I will have reached my 10th model fully painted and based ever!!
