Levarius’ Droid Army

Having done the metallic drybrush, I decided to give the entire models a light drybrush of Ushabit Bone. This was to hide any of the metallic overspill and also blend the dark contrast stains a little better. I was very happy with the result.

I also decided that the guns were too metallic, so they all had a second, thinned, coat of Black Templar contrast.

I then started the bases by using some basic sand and Luke’s APS basing glue as he says it dries much faster than regular PVA.

I realised i’ve missed a step from before the Skeleton Horde Wash…

For the squad leaders, I painted the yellow details on the helmet and body in Yuriel Yellow (GW). That way the contrast paint then darkened up the yellow and filled the recesses without having to do two separate washes

For the heavy units, I decided to do the markings after the main Skeleton Horde.

The red markings on the heads were done using 1 coat of Flesh Tearers Red Contrast, almost neat with only a small amount of water

The guns were then heavily drybrushed with a metallic silver. I can’t remember exactly which but it was from the Game Colour range from Vallejo. Though the metallic paint used doesn’t really matter!

I was also wanted to hint that the Droids are also made of metal, so I decided to lightly drybrush the edges of the armour with the silver too. This gives the impression of scraping and damage to the tips of the armour since the Droid walked off the production line. I’ve added a photo below, but it was hard for the camera to make out under my daylight lamp.

With the priming (and matt varnish done), it was time to do the main step for these Droids. Referring back to the previously mentioned facepage posts, I decided I did want to use Contrast Skeleton Horde for body/armour, however not quite as heavy as some had used it.

So to give a more subtle effect, I thinned the Skeleton Horde 1:1 with Contrast Medium. The results can be seen below

For the guns, contrast Black Templar works brilliantly. Most of the clankers just had 1 coat, but a 2nd thin coat was used sparingly where needed.

With the clankers built (the longest part of this whole process!…) I needed to decide how to prime and paint them. There were lots of good examples on the Star Wars Legion Facepage group where people had used the Skeleton Horde contrast paint to great effect. I wanted a similar colour, but with a slightly different tone. So rather than use a GW spray (sorry wraithbone you’re too expensive) I spayed them with a Halfords Primer ‘Rover Sandalwood Beige’. It’s a go too colour for me for anything that needs to be a sandy yellow

You need to be a little careful as the primer is a bit glossy, however some short quick sprays of matt varnish solve that!
