Kings Of War 3rd Edition Preview With Mantic Games!
October 14, 2019 by avernos
Gerry is joined in the studio by Rob and Matt from Mantic Games to talk about the upcoming third edition of Kings Of War.
As a huge Kings of War fan, getting to see more of the third edition from the developers is exciting stuff. The guys from mantic talk about the development process of third and how they approached this edition from a narrative standpoint. We also get to see some of the Northern Alliance faction and their beasties up close and talk about the titan class of creature.
What are you excited about for the third edition of Kings of War?

Maybe this is the edition I get involved and build myself an Ogre army. Always loved for the models and it really wouldn’t take long to make/paint an army of them…
I sat last night working out how to use my wrath of Kings hadross for a trident realms army
Hopefully 3rd Edition will finally get me motivated into getting my Dwarf and Undead armies “finished”. I have lots of skeletons for the Undead, but I need to add zombies, more ghouls, and cavalry. Dwarfs – I need to finish my brocks (don’t hate me world) and get more regiments painted up. Then I will be in a position to extinguish a certain someone’s Fire Elemental filth!
Nice to see further development of the background and fluff. Never been a huge fan of the rules from what I saw with 1st edition but hope this pleases all the fans of the game
It’s come as bit of a surprise to me, but I am really rather interested in KoW 3rd Ed and look forward to getting a copy of the rules in a few weeks. I’ll be readapting it for Romans, Germans and the like. And in 15mm or 10mm, but in sprit I am here 😉
Wouldnt it be easier to get the KoW historical book?
I have that which is what got me onto the idea in the first place. The unit stats in it just don’t do it for me and need a bit of work -the Romans in particular. Not looking for historical accuracy here, but something that gets a reasonable feel for types of units. 3rd Ed has a few rules changes that are worth taking on too.
Never played the game but the figures that have come out over time have been fabulous.
More fluff is always good 🙂
yes – my order for the book is in and I wait… My Armies want to do battle. yep armies problem is which to use on the night 🙂
Counting the days for when this ships. Can’t wait to get stuck in.
Great interview. Really looking forward to v3!
cheers
Will you be doing a let’s play? I love Mantic as a company and I love so many of their games but always struggled to get into Kings of War which I always thought was a bit if a shame. I desperately want to like this game so I think I will give 3rd a try
two coming, a short roundbreak explaining the game and touching on some of the changes so hopefully that will be of help for newcomers and veteran players, that’s this week.
Next week a longer ‘proper’ game, small forces, but showing off how a game plays out.
Been enjoying the teasers and Ronnie’s sneak peaks at Clash of Kings last month. My book should be arriving this weekend.
Check out Frantic Gamers latest podcast for more 3rd ed insight.
That review was great. If anything I would have been happy to watch a far longer review.
I wonder if the new edition would invalidate books like KOW Historicals? It was a bit over generic but the battles we had using the rule set were absolutely dispute free.
@avernos Is there a campaign system in there? Any chance you’ll use it for the Hastings battle?
@horus500 KoW Historicals is a stand alone book and game in itself, so no problem there. Also it seems that 3rd Edition is more tweaks, clarification and balancing so if you wanted to play with the 3rd Edition rules, I wouldn’t expect it to be a massive problem.
Also they may do another Historicals book later down the line if there is enough demand (I think I heard that on a podcast).
you did hear that Rob, Ronnie mentioned that it won’t be immediate, but that they will probably revisit it.
Also some tweaks for 3rd came from historical, which wasn’t a straight copy of the 2nd ed rules.
@horus500 no campaign system in there, but I would have no problem in playing Hastings with it, I would drop the scale but there are some interesting things that could be done using it.
Only played a couple of games of 2nd edition and liked it. Think I might have a go at 3rd, I must be serious, I painted a dwarf the other day!
I’ve never played a Rank and Flank game, but I may check this out. One of the hobby stores in the area plays it. Seems pretty fun
Played 2nd 2 a lot but it never really captured my imagination. U unfortunately another fantasy franchise that is yawning it’s way through a WHFB/Tolkien-esque setting.
I hunger for more nourishing lore ?♂️
Looking like I have to finally get my dwarfs back in shape and based! New edition equals new adventure!
Cannot wait to give the new edition a crack.
