Games Workshop Painting Tutorial: Wood Elf Treeman Durthu #1
May 13, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop have been doing a lot of very good painting tutorials of late and their latest is for the Wood Elf Treeman Durthu which is an epic model in every regard. See what you think as they work on the body...
What do you think of their methods and is it something you'll be trying with your Durthu?

Fair play to them that is a very good quality painting tutorial of basic techniques anyone can follow to get really good results. For GW sake I hope they put out more stuff like this.
We’ve actually added a whole bunch of their tutorials to the site so that you guys can get easy access to them…

They’ll all be listed here as we go along and we’ve worked back to dig up their ones for the Astra Militarum etc 🙂
I’d been keen on PP putting out something similar. Just last night I piggy backed my friend KD:M pledge to get a boxed game and Dragon King, and well, my mate is not very confident with painting. So as many of these types of tutorials that are free to view would do him some good.
This is quite a good presentation, and the painter really takes advantage of the range and how you can easily do gradients with their layers (IF you know what you’re doing), except…
1) Don’t use superglue to glue to a temporary stand if you don’t want to risk snapping your parts… use tack instead.
2) Never put the brush in the pot,
3) Don’t hold the model with your fingers,
4) Never use undilute paint for anything but dry-brushing
That said… edging and dry-brushing… not my style, obviously.
Yeah. It’s a great tutorial for getting results super easy.
I doubt we will ever see them use a wet palette for their tutorials. That’s not the GW way (blend paints together!! Why not just buy the 20 the blend from one shade to another).
He dilutes the layers but not the basecoat. Presumably the reason he doesn’t dilute the base coat is because he’s used a black undercoat. If you dilute your base coat over a black undercoat you’re going to be there a long time painting base coats.
I think it’s a superb video for beginners. Very easy to follow and everything very well explained and demonstrated.
Also, it’s GW paint. That’s apparently how you use that part of the range. Still, it’s a risk… You can’t do it with any brand and you really have to watch yourself.
Guilty of 2, 3 and 4 😐
I do the same – no paint shame!
It’s arguably less of an issue with the latest GW range : you won’t ruin your miniature doing it. However, you WILL ruin brushes.
Are we going to see your take on this? Maybe? Please?
I honestly don’t know…
The painting tutorials that GW have been doing recently have been great for encouraging more people to paint their minis to a decent standard. They’re not aiming for prize winning standards here, just how to make your miniatures look good with a few basic techniques. I was genuinely shocked to discover that there are people out there who don’t paint their armies :0
In fairness, playing games and painting is two totally different things, some people have no interest in painting and some have no interest in playing.
Probably why Dust is looking more and more appealing to me, play play play.
Hear hear !
Wow, you CAN polish a turd lol.
That’s unfair… This plastic kit is quite nice. Not worth the price, but nice.
Weird. I have that youtube channel listed and I didn’t see these posted. When I search all the videos on the site, I don’t see these ones. Obviously I’m doing something stupid.
@tribune maybe you are geographically outside youtubes target audience for these videos, and therefore dont get to see them?
