Community Spotlight: Sci-Fi Planes, Underworld Warbands & Direwild Dangers
September 22, 2019 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Aeronautica Imperialis by volleyfireandy
Leading the way for us this week is volleyfireandy who is screaming through the skies with the painting for his Aeronautica Imperialis set! We got a peek at some stunningly well painted Imperial planes this week.
There is some great work going into these, taking techniques and such that would have been used for painting planes from World War II and the like and transferred into this grimdark universe. One of the things that really caught my eye was how good the finish for these models is, especially with all of the dirt and grime slathered across them.
One of the other awesome things is that whilst the models have a fairly simple base scheme the additional weathering and use of spot colours (red and yellow) has really made these stand out.
I know a lot of folks have been really enjoying diving into this game and giving it a go. John here in the studio has been having a lot of fun with them himself and getting insanely obsessed with the little details!
I can't wait to see what volleyfireandy does with the Ork section of the Aeronautica Imperialis starter set but I'm sure it is going to be stunning!
Warhammer Underworlds Warbands by carlospictor
Next up we're turning to the awesome carlospictor who has been stepping away from massive Stompas and is instead painting up warbands from the world of Warhammer Underworlds. A few different warbands have taken shape alongside terrain and all sorts from the game.
The painting on these characters is awesome and shows off what you can do with some pretty arty tones. I love the way the gold armour has come out and the way it contrasts so nicely with the bright pinks and cool blues which serve to highlight important parts of the model. It's a nice tweak to the classic gold and blue colour scheme for the Stormcast Eternals.
One of my favourite factions within Age Of Sigmar is the Sylvaneth so I was happy to see what carlospictor has also painted up their warband from Warhammer Underworlds too.
Again, here you can see how some lovely arty tones have been used to create pieces which look like they have been ripped right from the artwork. I think this style works really nicely for the Sylvaneth in particular where they have an almost ethereal style. Those bright pinks and cool blues really push that High Fantasy feel you get from Age Of Sigmar.
Lastly from my picks we also have The Briar Queen and her cohorts who are also looking ghostly and awesome. This really is a nice little masterclass on painting up your Warhammer Underworlds warbands and making them pop.
I love the fact that as well as working on the painting of the models carlospictor has gone the extra mile and added the names to the base too so that you can tell at a glance who is who. I used to do this with my Mordheim figures although it always proved to be a bad omen and they died horribly the game after I did it! It's safe to say I decided to abandon the idea soon after.
Direwild Characters by joshtogo
Last but not least we have joshtogo who has painted up some figures from a game I didn't know existed. Direwild by Iron Horde Games is a dungeon crawling game with some wonderful artwork and also some really awesome miniatures within its cardboard housing apparently!
This inventive collection of characters has been painted up wonderfully by joshtogo and shows off an array of brilliant villains and heroes which can be used in the game. I really liked the tatoo work done on this villainous character above and on some of the minions too.
The nice contrast between the pale cloth, earthy leather and the blue/red skin was nice to see and I think it really brings the models to life. There's a lot to get excited about in this project as you have no doubt realised.
It is well worth diving in and finding out more about the models that joshtogo has painted for this game as they really do seem like a lot of fun to work with. The comic book style and over-the-top heroic proportions seem like a great way to do something big and bold plus it's good to see a splash of colour and vibrancy in a normally dank dungeon crawler game world.

Awesome stuff, can’t wait to see the Orc planes.
volleyfireandy is a Genius. I like all of his work. Just look at his 28mm Vietnam miniatures on oriskany´s latest Vietnam podcast. Awesome.
Nice work, everyone.
I havent had any desire to paint 40K stuff for years, but those Imperial ships are tempting.
Congratulations to all Golden Button recipients, certainly very well deserved 🙂
