VolleyFireAndy Aeronautica Imperialis
First Flight
Since Aeronatica Imperialis had it’s first release many years ago I’ve been tempted to play it, but missed it the first time. I’d been a little on the fence about this edition since release as it was yet another project to add to the pile, however, a quick demo game at Warhammer Chatham was enough to convince me to invest, and I think this may be the quickest I’ve gone from purchase to painted!
I’m going for an 80’s, US Navy style theme applied loosely to the aircraft, my Thunderbolts are from Fighter Wing 111 ‘Evil Sunzdowners’ for example…
After priming the aircraft black, I stippled on various shades of GW greys and whites as show in the attached pic, and then used some dark brown sponge weathering and artists oils applied as a wash to finish the aircraft after the decals were applied. All 4 aircraft probably took 2 evenings work to get done! Next up I’ll add some Destroyers, and then some more Thunderbolts, before starting the Orks.
They look really nice well done. I’ve gone/am going for a real-world naval scheme too, but not the USN.
The paint work looks really neat under the weathering from the close-ups. I’d never have thought that this is stippled
Thank you, I’ve taken to preffering it as a technique to airbrushing on stuff like this, as I prefer the texture it brings. It gives the models more of sense of life and patina, which works really well on these and the Titanicus models
For the stippling of the grey paint, do you use a stipple brush, regular paint brush or sponge?
A bit of all three actually. The base layer I do with a normal brush, then I use make up brushes to do the highlight stages, working from the centre of each panel outwards. For the chipping though, I use a sponge to apply a dark brown.
