Firelock & Phalanx Working On New Blood & Valor WWI Game
September 11, 2019 by brennon
Firelock Games, most well known for Blood & Plunder, and Phalanx Consortium are working together on a new range and rules for a World War I game called Blood & Valor.
The game is slated for a December release with rules based on the mechanics for Blood & Plunder but with some obvious tweaks here and there of course to fit the new era of warfare. They are planning to bring out a set of models to go alongside it too with a focus on the US Army, Late-War Imperial German and Late-War French as Starter Boxes.
This does not mean that there won't be British and other forces also coming to the tabletop. The British are included in the main rulebook and whilst they have their own models in the works they are dedicated to allowing you to use whatever miniatures you have in your collection to play the game.
It will be fascinating to see how the game plays but with Firelock working on this project you an assured that it's going to be good. Blood & Plunder is one of our favourite systems so seeing those key mechanics choices moving over into other games is great.
It will be neat to also see the tweaks made to the system to make it work in WWI. Of course, not all of the fighting was done in trenches but it will be interesting to see what other elements of the battlefield generally affect your clashes on the tabletop; plus you have the introduction of early tanks and such too!
You can keep up-to-date with news on Blood & Valor through their Facebook Group and of course by keeping an eye on what we find out too.
Are you going to be keeping an eye out for this one?

nice looking troops.
Looking good! It will be interesting to see how they can make trench warfare a really viable game.
They don’t try. I think there is only one trench connected scenario and maybe not even that. The trenches on that board was mostly so people would know it was ww1.
If you want to know more and see a full play through for it check out the historicon coverage I believe it was the last day
In the interview with @oriskany they specifically mentioned that it would be more than just trench warfare …
Even tanks/landships will be rare.

Thanks @avernos and especially @limburger for the link. Indeed I tried this game at Historicon on camera with the developers. It was neat, I especially like the “bidding” mechanic for initiative, allows you to really prioritize which phase will be important for you for any given turn. Regarding trench warfare in WW1: there are a number of ways to make this work. We actually have a 45-minute video: Top Five Tips for gaming World War I, a system-agnostic review of World War I gaming, with an emphasis on trenches. https://www.beastsofwar.com/featured/trench-warfare-tips/ Sticking to the Blood & Valor system, I haven’t seen… Read more »
If this is the one @dignity or @riskany played at Hisroicon, it looked interesting.
I loved the initiative system @bobcockayne
I love everything Firelock has done and the quality of their product can’t be over stated but I just don’t have an interest in WW 1 so this will be a pass foe me
I would not like to create a gaming board for this one! This might be a bit of a hurdle for this game… time will tell
One for the list. The sculpts are nice and it will be interesting to see how the game functions
Firelock makes awesome stuff, but I wish they had gone early WW1. The uniforms are more varied, the warfare more fluid. Late WW1 always looks and feels like early WW2.
I think it’s just WW1 it’s not tied to a specific year if memory serves
Well, since the American army is featured in the first release, it’s at least 1917 or later. Plus, no spikey helemts on the germans.
yeah still no, the fact that someone is partnered up to supply those minis doesn’t mean you have to use those figures or even that it is restricted to that time period.
I’ve wanted to get my hands on this system, ‘Blood and Valor’ since @oriskany played it on camera for us at Historicon this year.
I really want to try out a scenario with the ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ style play. Desert warfare, trying to ambush a train and stop supplies from reaching a fort. That sort of thing.
