@jamesedwards – That reminds me of what Bill Gates did towards the end of his time at Microsoft. From memory, he stood down from being CEO, still retained control at the board/President level (due to his shareholding) and appointed himself Chief Architect.

He was really wanting to get back to be more involved in how the products were designed, etc, and was less in love with the running of the business. He got someone in as CEO that he trusted/admired and enjoyed himself more.
