So a few days Fauxhammer posted up a Primaris Space Marine on his Facebook feed that just blew folks away with how crisp such a striking scheme had been applied. He was quick to let us know it was actually a painted using an app, and today put out a rather fascinating blog post about the app in question – Impcat

impcat – Digitally Paint your Miniatures & Models with impcat

I must admit that this sounds fascinating, and a neat way to test out schemes virtually before slapping paint on an actual miniature. The ability to take a photo of any miniature to mess around with, and to upload additional colours & paints, is fascinating.

Currently only available via the Google Play Store for android devises, IOS should be coming soon.

Having chucked a couple of quid at this and playing with it for a few minutes, I’m really impressed.

I love the “auto” mode – select a region of the miniature, select a base colour, and it can automatically choose the shade/highlight colours for you. Really nice.

Only real complaint is that as soon as I pinch-n-zoom, it makes the app run quite slowly. But, then again, it is only a beta (and my phone is a couple of years old).  I’ll try it on my android tablet this evening to see how it compares. But so far, looks very nice! Am interested in finding out how to create my own svgs from photos of my own minis….

That looks cool but $4.50 Cad seems a little high for a beta. Once they add a few more models I might pick it up.

It cost me three quid. That’s less than a fancy coffee (hey, Brighton prices you know) and not much more than a pot of Citadel paint. Even if it only ever worked with the couple of models in it, I thought it worth a punt to support the developers and to play with a cool tool. It’s still a bit of throwaway fun, even if it never progresses. But, if we support them at beta stage, they’re more likely to make it through alpha and to final release (and I’m guessing that early adopters get an upgrade path rather than have to buy it again?).

Not being critical (hey, we all do what we like with our own money) but genuinely surprised to hear £3 is considered expensive in a hobby that charges more than double (sometimes between three and eight times that) for a single mini.

I’m going to try contact the developer and find out how this “make your own svg” thing works – maybe with a few Blood Bowl minis, a few more people might be tempted to give it a go?

I’m currently unemployed so everything  feels expensive right now lol.

I don’t think the price is crazy it’s just when I see beta and when $5 is as much as the most expensive phone app I have bought it seemed high. All just a matter of perspective I suppose. I would rather pay 3-4x as much for a physical book over a ebook/pdf I’m just a physical goods kind of guy.

People hate paying for apps — like newspapers and delivery. Just how it is!

this app has so much potential. I can imagine model makers (especially CAD ones) releasing the svg with the mini so you can play with it before or after purchase. I can’t be the only one who doesn’t always understand what different parts of the model represent  (eg is the shirt part of the trousers or separate? Is it metal armour or a cloth jacket, …) and this could really help with that — above and beyond the trying out paint schemes.

looking forward to it being on iPhone and out of beta.

Just wanted to say thanks for sharing this.

Although, if you search “impcat” in Google. This forum post is actually a higher search result than may article it references. lol

@fauxhammer – have you considered a tutorial on making your own svg files using freeware (like GIMP + Inkscape)?

I’m keen to try out what you suggested, but am limited to using my works computer as I don’t have a personal licence for most of the Adobe suite (photoshop, illustrator etc). It looks complicated, but not impossible!

Great app, just the thing I’ve been waiting years for.  Can’t wait to see how it progresses.

@fauxhammer are there any plans for a desktop version?

If only I had the time. I’d love to be a more involved part of this impcat community, but It would take away from what I put into the blog.
