Monster & Mercenaries Find Their Way To Age Of Sigmar: Warcry
September 2, 2019 by brennon
Games Workshop is helping you expand your Warcry warbands with pre-orders coming this weekend for Monster & Mercenaries, an expansion supplement for the game which introduces iconic heroes and monsters into the mix.
This book allows you to add characters into the mix alongside your regular warriors, much like Kill Team has done with its Commander and Elite expansions. As Warren mentioned on the Weekender this past Saturday, it seems a little early for them to have done this, but having more options is never a bad thing.
The book will introduce characters for your Chaos warbands as well as those from other Grand Alliances. You'll also find within its pages rules for fighting against some of the largest beasts in the Mortal Realms like the mighty Chimera.
This massive beast has been repackaged so that it comes with rules for using it in Warcry, opening up the array of different quests you can undertake. I do like a good monster hunt scenario and played many of them in Warhammer Skirmish and Mordheim!
I do like the idea of changing things up during a campaign where one player gets to take on the role of the monster as your warband struggles to bring it down.
Terrain & Warbands
As well as the release of Monsters & Mercenaries you've also got a new terrain set coming your way for the Ravaged Lands range. The Defiled Ruins gives you a new mat and terrain elements for creating new battlefields to hack each other to pieces on.
Additionally, previously available in just the Starter Set, the Untamed Beasts and Iron Golems are also going to be available as separate warband boxes. So, if you want to get converting or just didn't get in on the game with them, to begin with, you now have the chance.
The monsters from the core box are also going to be available separately so if you fancy filling the battlefield with more of those critters you have that option too.
Warcry seems to be moving fast as Games Workshop keep you going with new offerings worthy of Archaon and the Chaos Gods. Maybe we'll see them working on new Chaos Warbands or dedicated sets for some of the other Grand Alliances in the future?
What do you make of the new goodies?

Have just finished building everything in the core set as of last week. Got the card decks for my existing armies and built warbands for those. Got about 6 games in so far, haven’t had the chance to pick up the other terrain sets or factions, already more stuff added to the range. As long all this stuff that is already out there for warcry is not windowed, it means there will be plenty of options in store over time to go pick these up. If there are warbands, books, terrain kits, whatever that are windowed releases then this is… Read more »
Very cool stuff – you’ve been busy!
Yeah I thought I was going at a good pace, but GW’s release schedule is faster than a speeding bullet lol. Just have to chill and enjoy the game and hope the new shiny stuff is still on shelves by the time I want to pick it up.
The release schedule for almost every single one of their new games is a bit too hectic indeed.
Although I am kind of glad that they gave us access to a few of the AoS factions at launch.
I suspect that the ‘starterset’ will be a windowed release like Killteam was.
So maybe a new WarCry starter set by Christmas ? (Killteam:Rogue trader was last year, right?)
I do wonder if they’ve got anything left for the inevitable Christmas shopping … unless they’re saving for a really big reveal and wanted to get both WC and AI a chance to shine.
Yeah there are already some local game stores not restocking the starter set. I expected the first expansions to hit around christmas, so a first big box expansion around then would seem about right but the rate they are going with warcry we could see it next month lol. There are still two warbands in the book that we haven’t seen yet so those wil be arriving soon as well, plus the rules in the book for mounted units still haven’t been explored yet. Ultimately I don’t mind the rushed releases, just as long as I can still pick things… Read more »
@thelostdog – if they follow the Kill Team release pattern, the books stay in print. The Battlefield boxes are whilst stocks last – they don’t get reprinted. Since the warbands are new with Warcry, it is hard to say, but since they are only way to currently get the figures listed in the rulebook, they will probably stick around. The release of the Starter set warbands as separately available, could indicate that the starter set may not be reprinted as quickly as the first Kill Team starter was. Having the figures separately available does provide one with the ability to… Read more »
Sorry @limburger, KT: RT was out for pre-order on 8th September last year, according to the OTT news article https://www.beastsofwar.com/warhammer-40k/kill-team-rogue-trader-next-week/
Kill Team: Commanders came out 13th October last year.
Blackstone Fortress was closer to Xmas, being released on 23rd November, roughly.
Did the Chaos figures have rules to use them as a Kill Team – I’m getting so confused 😉
lol … yeah, you’re right @hobbyhub. Killteam had this incredible fast release schedule as well. However Killteam was mostly repackaged 40k units (the Orkteam = Lootas/Burnas and Flash gitz) with new-ish terrain kits. As such you got a really good deal. Rogue Trader was the first boxed set which introduced new factions unique to the game. Warcry has been new stuff from day 1. They sort of ‘missed’ the opportunity to sell warbands for the AoS factions (I’m not giving them ideas, am I?) I was trying to stop myself buying this game at this speed, but it looks like… Read more »
@limburger – I don’t think the AoS factions were in from the start. One of the reasons they didn’t make it into the rulebook. The initial marketing was that the game was going to be Chaos only. I think the reason for the change was the reaction to this news – people wanted to use their AoS figures. Hence the card packs for those factions – too late to be included in the book due to time to playtest and balance. They may have called on the company that produces the AoS card game to help with printing and foil… Read more »
Is there a chaos unaligned faction book for AoS yet ? That’s where I’d fit WarCry … It’s tricky to judge ‘selling out’ is the result of minimal stock (expected sales) or extreme popularity when physical products are in the mix. Besides GW’s stated primary goals are 40K and AoS (in that order). Anything else is secondary at best. We’re only seeing minimal new stuff for Necromunda after its initial flood of content for example. Killteam content has been minimal too. The AoS Faction packs could have been planned all along. Maybe they got pushed forward? Content drop between this… Read more »
The two flgs I went to had both took a lot of pre-orders as well as stock, I got there a week after release and all their stock had sold and I was told they wouldn’t be bringing in the core two player set anymore, at one store they said it was due to the core set being a limited release and they couldn’t get it, not sure that was really the case though, either way they are not stocking it any more (edit: I just checked a bunch of online stores and no-one has it, only place I can… Read more »
Adding monsters to army’s is great especially for the likes of beastmen or chaos army’s.
All those look really good.
I can understand that they want to strike while iron is still hot but I have to agree with thelostdog that this is just too fast new stuff added to game.
I’d rather have a faction box for Order, Destruction and Death… as to create a varied warband requires 2-3 boxes in most cases…
I’m not interested buying an army to build a warband.
That is what one had to do for Kill Team, to have much variety in one’s force.
The only way around that was to buy something like First Strike (which might give the purchaser two Kill Teams) or a Start Collecting set. Both options were being suggested by various people, including GW employees.
The equivalent AoS box is Storm Strike, but I haven’t done the research to see if the figures contained provide a valid force in Warcry – and they are the push-fit minis.
As someone that hasn’t spent any money on Warcry, I find it fascinating to watch how this release strategy is playing out….. Compared to both Kill Team from last year and Aeronautica Imperialis this year.
There are, of course, differences to all three releases and connections to other products, but still fascinating – sorry I can’t do a Vulcan eyebrow raise in emoji form.
What?….already?
Is this a new scenery box or the core game stuff repackaged?
