Community Spotlight: Stalwart Romans, Undead Queens & A Colourful Lady
July 17, 2019 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Fantasy Roman Soldier by suetoniuspaullinus
We start off our look into the world of painting and hobby with a peek at what suetoniuspaullinus has been up to. His latest painted miniature is his Fantasy Roman Soldier, measuring in at 4omm in scale.
A lot of awesome detail has been worked into the paint scheme here. I love the way that the armour has come together when combined with the bronze of the shield and embellishment. I think the dirty look of his paint job works really well to give you the impression of a soldier who is slogging through the mud on the battlefield.
There is even a splatter of blood on his gladius and the skull on the base gives you an idea of the horror that he might be facing. I wonder what strange mythological foes this Roman has found himself facing?
Thorns Of The Briar Queen by piers
Next up, we're looking at some work by piers that we spied last week during our Hobby Hangout. This is a wonderful paint scheme for the Thorns Of The Briar Queen warband from Nightvault.
There is a lot of great painting on display here. The first thing that struck us was the way in which the rusted metal has come to life. The twisted metal looks like it truly has been drawn up from the depths. I think this then gives you a nice level of contrast when compared to the pallid green spiritual flesh.
The Briar Queen herself really stands out then from the group with an extra level of highlighting. She is a beacon of horrifying light on the battlefield and works really well as a stand out character whilst also being tied to the group as a whole.
Lady Olynder by d2painterth
Last but not least we're looking at the stunning work by d2painterth on another Age Of Sigmar miniature. Here we have his take on Lady Olynder who has been painted up to match a Day Of The Dead paint scheme.
This miniature has been painted up over a long time and slowly but surely the wonderful details have come to life. There is not only a good choice of colours in the mix but also some stunning freehand work too.
The project which is linked above goes into detail about the different stages of creating this character and as you can see in the image below, there are some wonderful details to try and pick out.
This is something which continues across the model as a whole. Having her painted in such a unique way almost lifts her out of Age Of Sigmar so that she could maybe find her way into a game like Malifaux or even Kingdom Death: Monster. The work that has gone into the skeletal head underneath the veil is stunning and it's also very chilling too.
I would recommend that folks head on over to this project and see what other aspects of the model d2painterth has worked on. Those blood red roses and the spirits swirling around her are something to behold.
I'm fairly sure that I could keep looking at this model for a good few hours! I very much hope that d2painterth goes far with his attempt to win the Everchosen competition!
