Thanks for showing this. Must say it looks superb. It actually reminds me of a really good railway layout, every time you look at it, you find something new!

I will also say that Irish mammies have changed over the centuries. When I was young, no matter what the weather was doing you’d be out with a coat and a few layers on, you’d never have got away with going to battle half naked!

Some of the mammies were fighting too. Just like today. Clothing may have changed from fur to Faux Fur, but the lack of it still remains.

I never thought about it like that, now I am having flashbacks of some terrible nights out in the discos!

They didn’t know then it’s a recent discovery north of Dublin that have roman artefacts which some believe point to a roman trading post.

I do actually think Irish history and its importance in the past is very misconstrued. It really wasn’t the backward, savage and unwashed place that many would have you believe. Perhaps I am wrong but when you consider how advanced New Grange was, how we managed to settle Scotland (the Romans built a wall they were so scared of the natives, we just moved in), and be a centre of theological thinking and learning within the British Isles things were not as bleak as many would suggest. In my (rather simple) mind, it seems illogical to think we didn’t trade… Read more »

I have read and I have no idea where that when Italy and Rome were beginning to get over run at the end of the Western Roman Empire, they very nearly moved the Vatican to Bangor in County Down as the monastery there was regarded as one of the most important in Europe

Very interesting @torros I can imagine the current population of Bangor’s reaction to that news if it was announced today lol

They did have a wall across the central belt of Scotland but we did a Wembley on that one they only found this when they were doing building work in Edinburgh and found the foundations of parts of it named the antonine wall.

Cheers for that @Zorg, never heard of that before despite living in Edinburgh for 4 years! That is my bedtime reading for the next few days sorted!

While I think history would suggest that the Romans would win as long as their lines of supply were not over extended, I’ve got to be rooting for the Irish to win!

For quite a while after the Roman invasion of Britain I think there were calls in the Senate for Rome to withdraw as it was too expensive to run and keep armies in the field there. The non invasion of Ireland was probably an economic decision as much as anything. I was reading recently that they think Dublin was founded by the Saxons/Anglo Saxons and started out as a trading post with the Irish

Hell the Romans had to invade BRITAIN twice. Julius Caeser went in there, but the invasion didn’t hold (I think more to a feeling of: “oh, this isn’t worth it” than to military defeat), not until the next century did Claudius go back in for good.

Many believe that once the Romans stopped expanding they began the fall. Of course the large overburdened bureaucracy and as stated above the expense of the army in the field added to the growing political problems. It was an empire designed around growth and once that stopped the decay truly set in.
