This historicon is kind of making me want to look at modern settings.

You know what, seriously … Moderns is great for gaming on a budget because the unit / mini counts are USUALLY quite small. Just make sure you run the “Regular Army” force, and not the insurgents. Then you need dozens and hundreds of minis.

You can also often get away with you sets for buildings, civilian vehicles, etc … if you’re careful about the scale and then distress / add detail, etc.

Lots of tables exhibit this at the convention – clearly convention veterans who know to strike a balance between “accuracy” and playability. I’ve seen tables set in Jungles and Forests where there are just too may trees on the table and whenever you go to move a mini, you wind up knocking over three trees.

Force on Force is probably my favorite Moderns game, just because it allows larger engagements and actually “understands” and conveys the difference between regular and irregular asymmetric warfare.

This is superb. Different objectives going on at their own pace on the same table. A beautifully thought-out game.

I agree. And if two firefights somehow merge later in the game, or a vehicle from “firefight A” heads down the road into “firefight B” – and “A” is on Turn 5 and “B” is on Turn 7 … well, a little bit of MANAGED chaos is good in a Moderns wargame.

Indeed, even if it provides a MOMENTARY advantage to one side. Fortunes of war, man. Just so long as it’s not intentional or systemic (i.e., players can’t get “gamey” and PLAN on it).
