First, noisy neighbour does it again!
Damn and here I was hoping my inability to get to sleep would pay off in nabbing that vaunted ‘First!’ comment.
?
Happy Sunday! It’s the XLBS Show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let the Hobby Goodness begin.
With Waren on holiday, we’ll get to hear about hobby from brother Lloyd.
Grab some popcorn, mountain dew, or maybe breakfast if you’re in the UK and let the good times roll.
@lloyd have you visited the Churchill tank in Carrickfergus? They have one on display. It is as exciting as a tank sitting outside own its own can be, but its a Churchill! Plus the Castle is great. Skelliebobs do look good – pretty sure Green Stuff World do bags of resin skulls, don’t know what size they are though. Have you tried Mantic’s skeleton sprues? Loads of different heads on them but they are quite small.
Hey @Robert
Yeah I’ve been got loads of pics of both the Churchill tank and castle in Carrickfergus, a few times now 🙂
Will check out Green Stuff World and yeah the Mantic skulls are to small.
Korea is extremely interesting. Along with the actual battlefield the allies had a huge problem with Soviet Spies in their own ranks. I mean the Head of Anti-Soviet Operations in MI-6 was a Soviet Spy who worked with a ring of four other high level spies called the Cambridge Five who were all passing Korean War secrets to the Communists. I mean the reason HUAC existed in the first place is because it replaced the McCormack–Dickstein Committee which was disbanded after it was found that Dickstein was taking money from the Soviets. The Kit should be mostly the same as… Read more »
This is something we covered in a few of our sitrep podcasts. The question was put to me whether the kit would be more or less the same. Yes … and no. It depends on the “level” of wargaming we’re talking about. Small scale infantry combat … yet, more or less the same. However, the MIX of weapons in a given platoon will be different. No more M3 ” grease guns,” replaced with more Thompsons and especially M1 carbines. More BARs. From a modelling perspective much more COLD WEATHER gear, both the WW2-era greatcoats and more “advanced” parkas, etc. Mid-level… Read more »
Here’s a pic of the British troops that will be coming out soon
I quite like the look of the Korean People’s Army figures they have shown as well.
ooooh…. the need is hard when I see those
Oh hello! thanks for the pic @Elessar2590 going off to see what else has filtered out 🙂
Can we still use late war British in Korea or are new troops a needed?
Late War WWII would be fine the uniform didn’t change at least not for our purposes. These are meant to be in a “Summer” Uniform.
Not overly convinced 28mm is the way to go for the Korean war
15mm Flames of War Korea would be cool.
Hopefully Bolt Action Korea sells so well that other companies notice.
I know Pendraken have recently released a range for the Korean War
https://pendraken.co.uk/post-war/korean-war/
This is just the infantry . The WW2 sections should have all the tanks etc
Hi @torros , I think it will be fine, plenty of battles over just a few hills right up to entire cities. So just a matter of choosing a scale that suites what your doing in the end.
@brennon – you could also use them for Saga, which would probably fit quite well considering the Viking/Saxon feel to the Northmen. [edit: Lloyd beat me to it; guess that’s what I get for pausing the vid to type my comment lol] On the Bloody Nine – I’ve always imagined him with a shaggy beard personally. On Byaz – rephrasing what Ben said, he’s Gandalf if Gandalf acted like the Emperor from 40k. The next challenge – just for the lulz, I think you should revive a bunch of old internet challenges to do. ? Weird War – I’m with… Read more »
“Weird War – I’m with Justin on this; just because you have a lack of men doesn’t mean you’d just go arm anyone in the vicinity, especially if they had only recently lost a war against you. If you armed them there’s just too high a risk that they’d backstab you and join the other side. The only way they wouldn’t join your enemy would be if they hated them more than they hated you, and even then just arming them isn’t going to guarantee they’ll join in on your side; they could just as easily decide to sit it… Read more »
Happy Sunday! To answer the question… Yeah! Why not? With ‘Jungle Warfare’ the theme at Historicon I suspect the lads will see plenty of Korea as well as Vietnam and WW2 on the table. I also know that there will have been plenty of modern Korean wargaming of a sort going on in military circles on both sides of the Korean divide over the last 65 years. Obviously MiG Alley is announced as an arial format, I’m sure Oriscany has a couple of hex games. Gaming on the tabletop would probably be better as more of a skirmish game. Me,… Read more »
M46 Patton developed as an evolution of tbe Pershing in 1948 to replace Shermans and used alongside M26 Pershings (now considered a medium tank) through the 50s. Later replaced by new models using the Patton name; the M47 and as we now know the M48 Patton used in Vietnam.
Osprey have a good book for kit etc.

Class – thanks for the info @CoxJul
The Korean conflict was never declared a WAR is was classed as a Police Action
pretty sure that was vietnam that was undeclared while Korea was a civil war that expanded with proxies.
Conflict or war, does it really matter as they both have the same bad smell?
Yeah the whole Police Action thing was interesting, it my have started being called that but surely at some point everyone dropped that?
@grimwolfuk – @avernos – @lloyd – Police Action v. War … at least to some extent it’s a “legal” distinction that’s becoming less and less relevant in how the US government “officially” is supposed to work. By our Constitution, the President is allowed to declare war and is given official war powers only by a Resolution of Congress. By calling it a Police Action (or intervention or nation building or humanitarian mission or invoking precedents of “Clear and Present Danger” or who knows what …) it legally allows the President to sidestep Congress, at least to a certain degree, for… Read more »
Ah, I see thank you @oriskany
I had a feeling it was something to do with that. In a similar way to the “troubles” in the north. If it was designated a war it would have brought with it additional issues.
@lloyd / @avernos – it also gets VERY muddy when dealing with international bodies like the UN or NATO – with charters and treaties to which we are signatories. Okay, treaties are actually international law (broadly speaking), so when a situation arises that “requires” us to send people somewhere … … If we do, and Congress does not approve, are we violating Congressional war powers? … If we don’t, are we in violation treaty? In theory, the Constitution is the “highest law” of the land, but even that isn’t the most clear, where the President is the “Commander in Chief”… Read more »
@avernos you’re right plus officially declaring War on someone gives them credibility and legitimacy. For example the Geneva Convention of 1949 was used by His Royal Highness Prince Leonard Casley of the principality of the Hutt River here in Australia to succeed from the Nation using a clause about recognising enemies undefeated in a war since he declared war on Australia then made peace and they accepted it. Official wars can have a lot of flow on effects nowadays. If the British had declared War on the Rebels in Northern Ireland then made peace like they did then the Rebels… Read more »
Good morning, Backstagers! 😀
I’ve actually wargamed Korea several times, in several systems, namely the Chosin Reservoir.
For current or former members of the US Marine Corps, the battle has taken on mythic status.
Inchon is another famous Marine Corps operation, one of the most complex and risky amphibious operations in history.
Meanwhile, the Sitrep team has posted the Part 3 finale of the Vietnam live game streamed between myself and @stvitusdancern . If you’re interested, check it the highlights at the link below:

Hope you’ll like it!
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday! Thanks for the show and hope to see you at Historicon! 4 days away, can hardly wait.
Sounds good, @irondragon6 – hope to see you there. 😀
@lloyd GreenStuffWorld do a bag of skulls http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/scenery-accessories/350-100x-resin-skulls-sack-skulls.html
Don’t forget you can have some guys without heads, or other limbs. They are animated by magic, after all. One or two in a unit adds character. A whole unit of knights or cav without heads could be awesome. Could even replace some heads with pumpkins, but then you are heading down the fairy tale route.
Will you be adding any of the Undead Halflings from TTCombat? It always bugs me when a necromancer goes all racist and refuses to raise non humans.
Oh there’s Undead Halflings, will have a look @lawnor I wonder if they might look very short compared to the Runewars Skellys?
Did you just ask if Halflings are short? You do know what Halflings are, right?
Dunno if they are live publiclly, but their kickstarter has paid out so you can find that website to look at them and i’m sure they will be being sold soon at the last. I just painted 3 and what I assume is an old GW zombie. They are small, but I have no issue with the scale matching up.

“Did you just ask if Halflings are short? You do know what Halflings are, right?”
LOL – mean to short looking.
Happy Sunday, the colour scheme for the muddy skellies looks great. I might have to look into the Korean documentaries to see what it looks like – I know about it but not a lot about it if you know what I mean. Thanks for the show.
Nice, muddy skellies – FTW :p
@lloyd This any use?

@Damon – they might do the trick 🙂
I’ve still got Hasslefree’s Ferrus knocking around in the “to do ” pile as I really, REALLY want to do a warband representing Druss the Axeman and the defenders of Dross Delnoch from David Gemmell’s Legend. Either that or do some of the characters from his Rigante series, especially the latter two books…
Praise Nuffle!
Happy Sunday! @brennon Mini butterflying…. yeah real hard to manage. One thing that works for me is that for the projects you really really want to be done. once they are done they are done. For instance I do feel quite ashamed to have been playing 40K since 3rd edition… but yet I do not have one fully painted 2000 pts army? Why? Well Flames of war, Aeronotica Imperialis…. DBM, DBA, video games is a huge culcript too I will say. So yes, it’s hard but tone has to try to focus. And since a few months I must say… Read more »
Hey @wolfch – Here’s the place https://www.debrisofwar.com/store/p170/15mm_Stowage.html
Warren originally ordered them for the FOW Boot Camp but I grabbed them.
when I see that I wonder… why my brother never did wargame? that’s real useful
happy sunday everyone! love the face of Ben in the end, my son does the same face when i say something weird or ….. ? I have known 2 people when I was much younger who fought in the Korean war. these brothers were cheerful and funny boys, the family said, but they were lucky enough to come home, but were very different people. they didn’t tell much what they did there, but these were 2 of the 4 brave people I may have known. (the other 2 are my grandparents during WW2 but that story is for another time)… Read more »
Great show guys. Look forward to saying hi at Historicon.
The Chinese didn’t have any plans to get involved in Korea, Mao basically told the North Koreans that he’d only provide troops and support if the US pushed past the 38the Paraellel. You have to remember China had been fighting the Japanese from 1937-45, then following the end of WW2 went through a civil war between the communists and Kumintung Nationalists under Kai-Shek. China really wasn’t in a position to want to fight another war, but when the US pushed up to the border with China, Mao had no choice but to fight. The country was a mess reeling from… Read more »
What’s interesting is that my grandfather fought for the British in Korea and my wife’s grandfather fought for the Chinese. Yet during WW2 a few years earlier both fought on the same side against the Japanese in Burma and China. My grandfather serving with the Royal Marines and her grandfather with the Chinese Communists in a tank regiment in Korea, though in WW2 he was in an infantry role.
McArthur was replaced because he was advocating dropping the H-Bomb or A-bomb on Chinese cities, he wanted a full scale war in China, but more sensible heads prevailed. I don’t think the US public wanted another large scale war having just come out of WW2.
Tank wise, the Centurion was available for the British at this point, as it was produced in 1946. The Korean conflict was the first time the tank saw action in a combat situation.
@lloyd I think the British unit that fought off 10,000 Chinese was the Glousters. I believe it was Hill 235 at the Battle of Imjin River 22-25 April 1951.
Think your right mate.
Happy sunday folks!
Good show guys. Hope I can last without my shows next weekend.
look on the bright side – historicon!
I think you’ll find out it was the Glosters who now where two cap badges one in front one at the back because of that battle they fought in.
they said, I think, that the hill in front of them in the morning just got up and moved towards them, as the Chinese had moved down during the night.
The Gloucestershire Regiment fought in two ranks back to back at the battle of Alexandria in 1801 hence the two cap badges.
Sorry for passing out bad info.
And I thought I had something in my head I could pass on to people.
I do know thing but im not as good as remembering as I used to be.
Thanks for putting me on the right track.
I only recalled it because my late father did an attachment with the Gloucestershire regiment when he was in the army and he always enjoyed regaling in stories on regimental history.
no problem, ozzie.
it’s good, that your able to do that.
I don’t feel bad at all, in fact, a bit silly. but glad at least someone knew what I was talking about put me right before I changed history, as you know anything written will be taken as gospel. and even so, I was 100 and odd years out. lol.
