Take A Peek At Gale Force Nine’s New Dune Board Game
June 28, 2019 by brennon
Gale Force Nine has been giving folks a peek at their new version of the DUNE board game which is going to be arriving on tabletops soon.
First off, that is a beautiful cover. I love the art style that they have done for her, evoking feelings of the novels rather than the film. In the game, you'll be the leader of one of the six great factions. You are looking to control the most valuable resource in the universe, melange, a mysterious spice that is only found on the planet of DUNE.
“All fades before melange. A handful of spice will buy a home on Tupile. It cannot be manufactured, it must be mined on Arrakis. It is unique and it has true geriatric properties.”
To this end, you will be looking to be both diplomatic and aggressive with your actions, choosing the best way to deal with each of your opponents.
This is a stunning looking game that seems to go into a lot of detail, developing the existing DUNE game for a new audience. I also really like that the factions are different with a variety of powers, giving you a variety of choices on how you play the game each time you sit down to play.
Do you think that you will be diving into this big strategic tabletop game? I know a lot of people have been waiting for this one so it would be great to see what you make of the game so far!
Let us know your thoughts below...

@brennon Did you know that Iron Maiden have a song based on the novel? To Tame A Land… “Without a stillsuit you would fry On the sands so hot and dry In a world called Arakis It is a land that’s rich in spice The sandriders and the ‘mice’ That they call the ‘Muad’Dib'” The song as a slight middle eastern influence running through it, especially if you listen closely to Steve Harris’ bassline that really drives the song, which I feel adds to the atmosphere of the song. Very underrated song in their back catalogue. When you write the… Read more »
Looks good, I must get my old Avalon Hill copy out of the loft to compare.
I will be looking into this game loved the books and loved the film the TV series were good to in my opinion,
I want a Dune miniatures game… I thought one was being made? What happened to that? Anyway, This looks a lot like the old AH game.
Brian Herbert elluded to multiple deals going on about the Dune ip. So what you are reffering to may also be in the make and launched after the new film and/or series.
had a look at the components…looks like a reprint and upgrade of the Avalon hill version. I wonder if it will include the duel and spice harvest expansions. look to biradganegeek for the expansions.. there are many such as ix and bene theliaxu (cloners). Still..good to see it in pro t again for the new movieco.ing out by Dr is villeneuve(and just watched blade runner 2049).
I am so excited for this. I have wanted a Dune game for so long and was always very sad I didn’t get the chance to play the old board game. Very excited to see it return in this shiny, new form, and it’s one I can’t wait to play. I know there are lots of other plans for the Dune IP so I may have to dig out the book again and read it for… let’s say the fifth time? Never bothered with any of the sequels or prequels though, anyone know if they’re worth a look? I’ve heard… Read more »
@dracs I got a little bored with the sequels but I absolutely loved the House Atreides prequel. Really gives context to the events of Dune and is a great story in itself.
I must admit that those prequel books are rather good for something written by Kevin J. Anderson and Frank Herbert’s son Brian Herbert. Then again I read those back in 2000 or 2001 so it has been while since I read those.
This is based on the Avalon Hill game with updates and tweaks to the rules to make a bit more modern. Release in USA is scheduled for August 24 and is available for pre-order through Alliance distribution. Looking forward to getting back into Hurbertt’s work.
As a big fan of the Avalon Hill game I definitly buy this one.
Id like miniatures. Hm… dunno… The graphic dart on the box and the art of the characters is very disparate.
The Spice Must Flow.
OMG. I played many time the original game. It is edgy on some points, but i love it for his immersion. It had a very long gaming time and it is a bit unforgiving on faults. But hopefully they handled it. I so a Must-Buy.
I’ve always loved Dune this will be a must have for me.
Looks like they took some of the design elements I saw on several home brew versions on Board Game Geek. I am happy they look like they are staying faithful to the same game play as the original AH game. FFG tried to capture those elements with Rex: Final Days of an Empire, but failed in my opinion. Saving my pennies for when this shows up in stores.
