I’m watching a stream and they are going though the Scale75 catalogue looking at all the busts and I’m thinking to myself that I’d love to try one one day, but I’m nowhere near good enough to do one justice yet and I had a thought: Does anyone do a Noob Bust? Not just a simple bust, but it comes almost as a beginners kit, with full detailed walk you through it painting instructions, complete with colour suggestions, possibly from a few ranges, most likely from the manufacturers range. Perhaps it even comes with the full set of recommended flesh tones? A full introductory project kit. Does anything like this exist?

Have a look on Andrea Miniatures. They sell a lot of larger figures and busts and they might have something. They also do books and DVDs (not sure if they are still available), there is probably something on busts!

@lawnor that is a good question.
There was a kickstarter a while ago which had busts for the Infinity range which I thought looked cool and beginner friendly :

They also had a painting guide as part of the kickstarter which included paints used for all of them, but only instructions for bits of the busts (like the face). I don’t see it as part the website so it may be a kickstarter exclusive.

One of them also has the instructions for the painting the face in Angel Giraldez Volume 2 painting guide.
Both of his books are interesting reading material as they cover his expert level techniques in great detail.

None of this was very beginner friendly (IMHO) so I haven’t started on mine (yet). I might when I do find something that is a bit more entry level.

I have both the Angel books. He has 3 busts in the first one as well as that one in the second, but I thought he had them custom made. I might see if they are on general release and then I could follow his book. He doesn’t always go in to enough detail I find, and its not always clear in the pic where he has applied the latest subtle highlight that vanishes in to the previous layer.

I’m not exactly a beginner to painting, but I’ve never done a bust. It’s my understanding that due to the scale change a lot of the cheats and techniqes from 28mm minis don’t translate. I’ll check out Andrea and Luxumbra in the morning.

@limburger @sundancer Busts do usually have busts. In fact I hear due to a typing error theres a new type of bust being designed focusing on a different part of the body, with Lloyd as the target audience. Butts.

@lawnor I agree that his guides don’t show every step, but then I think it is tricky to photograph such a process as a lot of details are very subtle.

At least that’s what I think after seeing the long lists of different shades of a single colour, which reads like overkill but then I see the results and it apparently is what is needed.

Or maybe we’re taking the wrong approach by looking at the expert level guides ?
A true beginner friendly guide and a bust that would be fun with limited skill/experience would be what is really needed.

There is a serious lack of links to actual beginner friendly busts. I therefore conclude: there aren’t any beginner friendly busts…

Such a shame. Hopefully someone somewhere has seen this and been inspired. If I ever get to talk to anyone relevant I’ll see about making the suggestion.

Part of my “beginner kit” thinking is to also include instructions that talk me through every step and every colour for my first bust. Angel didn’t do a guide for this bust. If he put the Thais girl bust out for £20-30 that might work for me. I’d really like my hand held through my first bust. It helped develop me through my first minis and now I’m good at improvising, although I do still love guides. Busts seem to require a real step up in skill and technique and understanding of light, shadow and colour. If I had to paint one now I’d end up treating it the same as a 28mm mini I think.
