I know we are going though a phase of new products for flames of war, which is good for any 15mm ww2 gaming system, but i would  love to see beasts of war play a game of battlegroup.

I “feel” they would love the system… but i dont think it happen as it would clash with all the great and hard work going to flames right now…

Anybody like to see this game come to life here…

Yes, would love to see it.  I have the rulebook and one or two of the campaign books but understand that OTT don’t have the resources to cover everything, would be great if they did though!  Might even encourage me to paint my piles of 20mm figures and tanks.

Battlegroup, for me, has barriers to entry greater than FoW.  Availability of the books in physical format, the price of the books (though they are worth the money even if you don’t play like me) are just some.  Not a criticism, but there is also an intimidation factor to get it right.  Perhaps an idea is when the initial excitement of the FoW slow grow league etc has run its course, and there are lots of painted forces and people are looking to perhaps take their WW2 gaming further, some of us on the forums (with maybe some help from the likes of Gerry and I know Piers posts here as well) could look at how to use our FOW forces for Battlegroup and perhaps some other WW2 rulesets and go from there.  Just an idea i’m throwing out there.

Battlegroup is a good system to play and I’ve enjoyed playing it. Coming from playing the old Rapid Fire riles, adapting to Battlegroup was easy.

I think you are right, the team at BoW / OTT would really enjoy the system (especially John who would definitely want to put on the table a full armoured division ?).

If you are interested in some of the fames we’ve played then please feel free to take a look at our blog. ?

Indeed guys.. and thanks chaingun…look forward to peeking at your reports with a cuppa..

I played a 28mm game with my british paras with chain of command at the start of the year with a friend. My plans are to do the same with BG and then with bolt action and just see which feels right for me..

The last 2 will be solo testing, but should be great fun. love the 2d6 damage system in BG for tanks etc…

The transfer from Fow to battlegroup is easy and is a way better system. I dont agree about cost being an isssue and you only need the rule book to get started and has a campaign included.

Anyone like myself who  already had plenty of models from playing Fow is good to go. The battlegroup forum on face book is also a great source of info for new players especially as the writers Warwick and Piers are online constantly.

Any questions are answered prom ptly and help is there from other players . There is a very active group with photos of models, playthroughs, terrain tutorials and suggetions of where to purchase models you are searching for. Its an excellent gaming system and i believe BOW would love it.

I shall look into it further..,though in my very own personal experience it wouldn’t be hard to be better than FoW

Battlegroup actually has been featured on the site in the past, just not terribly recently, I’m afraid.  We used the system in several series, namely:

    • World War 2.5
    • Barbarossa
    • Desert War
    • Sea Lion
    • Dunkirk

Also, a whole article series just on Battlegroup system itself.

“Battlegroup” WW2 Tactical Wargame Part One – Introduction & Overview

“Battlegroup” WW2 Tactical Wargame Part Two – Fire & Movement

“Battlegroup” WW2 Tactical Wargame Part Three – Battlefield Options

“Battlegroup” WW2 Tactical Wargame Part Four – Scenarios & Campaigns

@oriskany with Battlegroup now under the Plastic Soldier Company and Warwick personal commitment I’d say this has a very solid future. One of the biggest issues IMO was it kept selling out and reprints took an age and PDFs not always avaliable till more recent years or so.

Still given the BG Pacific is coming later this year I’m sure your already planning a series for when it launches right 🙂

@torros – those articles were that good, huh? 🙂

@admiralandy – yeah, another SMALL thing … although I totally understand why it’s like this … is how vehicles and guns are on separate stat lines in separate sections of the book.  PSC has been working up stat cards to beat this issue, I’ve been using handwritten 3×5 cards myself, but it solves the problem nicely and retains Battlegroups attention to detail and flexibility in list building.

Mad far as a series goes… I mostly produce for Sitrep / Moderns … but I will definitely be buying this book to play!  US Marine Corps baby!

    Thanks Oriskany,

Your series are always worth a read, I’ve gotten a year or so behind BOW/OTT weekenders and series, though did see you did a batrep for Falklands, is that something your going to cover in more depth with a series?

Be interesting if that gets a spin of book once NORTHAG complete.

No worries at all, @torros , I was just playing around.  In all seriousness, that series is about three years old, an eternity in “internet time.”

@admiralandy – I don’t really write articles full-time on the site anymore, but I do produce documentary videos for the Sitrep team.  We have a channel on Podcast, Twitch, Facebook and YouTube.  The series I produce is called “Ops Center” where we take a pretty detailed wargamer’s-eye look at conflicts around the world since 1945.

We have recently closed out a four-part Ops Center series on the Falklands, which is available via the link below.

    I hope you like it!
