Cauldron Born Miniatures Serve The Deadly Powries!
June 22, 2019 by brennon
Cauldron Born Miniatures is on Kickstarter right now looking to fund the creation of their warband of Powrie, based on the Red Caps of folklore and legend. Check them out...
These Powrie were sculpted by the masterful Paul Muller and give you a warband of these dangerous fellows for you to use in all sorts of different skirmish games. Maybe they'd even make good fodder for a dungeon as you delve into it in search of lost treasures?
I like the style of them which paints them as wild and murderous. The little beady eyes are a great touch and I like that their weapons are all dented and battered from long years of use.
A range of other characters are also offered up as part of the Kickstarter but the Powrie are the main focus of the campaign, giving you a chance to own yourself a cool alternative force for the Fantasy tabletop. Say...maybe these would be good for SAGA?
What do you think of the models?

Those are nice.
great looking figures.
they will work well as old Gretchen’s I think.
Some of the bigger figures on the KS are fantastic especially the Cyclops. Paint the rags on the Prowie as tattered tartan, add some packs of wild haggis and you’d have an amazing fantasy Scottish army for Saga!
What the devil are those things?!? They look so creepy and wierd, they remind me of some of the creatures from the Labyrinth. I really like them ?
goblins with beards ?
or
crazy dwarves ?
Either way a very interesting set of creatures.
When a mummy goblin and a daddy dwarf love each other very much…
Thanks for that nightmare fuel..
Would you prefer a daddy goblin with a mummy dwarf?
?
*eh* let’s just say that that variant is more likely … although mummy wouldn’t volunteer for the job (to put it mildly).
I love these little guys but 40-odd quid for 7 minis seems a tad pricey.
It’s not like GW never charges 9$ / mini ever … 😉
Also keep in mind that Kickstarters only ever sell at or below ‘retail friendly’ prices if they expect to sell a lot of product once they cover the basic costs of mould making.
A small team doing every cast individually isn’t going to be cheap.
I would these guys are similar to Otherworld Miniatures (they are great sculpts and on the more pricey end) and they are around £5 a mini…so 7 minis would be £35. The Powries still seem pricey to my mind.
Don’t forget that if they want to produce a range then they need to be pitched right price-wise. I’m sure these are fine for some but not for me sadly.
That’s part of the problem of being a small business.
There is a fine balance between what the market accepts and what it costs to actually make.
I’m guessing that they don’t have a core product range that can help fund their business, so they can’t afford to drop the price.
However … kickstarters need not be ‘cheaper’ than retail.
I know they often are, but I wonder how many could afford to be in hindsight.
These are really weird. I like them!
They could be painted as barbarian dwarves. Slayers, as you will.
