Warlord Games Introduce The Ancient World Of SPQR
June 21, 2019 by dracs
Warlord Games have released a new trailer to introduce us to their new game of historical skirmish combat SPQR.
SPQR lets players take command of warbands from a number of civilisations that fought for dominance around the ancient Mediterranean, including warriors from Rome or one of the Greek city-states.
This new video introduces us to some of the basics of the gameplay, showing us how a game of SPQR will play out across the battlefield.
SPQR is a game I am very excited to play myself. While I have never been the biggest historical player, I am very interested in the conflicts of the ancient world and dark ages. This looks like the perfect system in which to explore the heroic groups of warriors that feature so heavily in ancient tales, as well as a good way in which to forge your own narrative within the setting.
Does this video have you excited to delve into SPQR?

Sounds pretty cool. More campaign-based skirmish games are always good in my book. Looking forward to seeing some proper gameplay.
No
Hm, the rule system sounds a little dull to me. As for game mechanics ther is nothing new or “special” about it. Only thing who could be good is the campaign system and the Hero leveling.
Am I excited for this game after watching this video? No, not really. But who knows, perhaps the game will catch me any time soon. Sorry…
That looked alright. Nothing really stood out as particularly innovative but I’ll be picking this up along with Mortal Gods just to check them out.
Initially this got me excited but now I’d fake a headache if it wanted to spend the evening with me.
Is the game really this mundane and boring? No new or novel idea’s, just roll for initiative, roll to hit, roll to wound etc etc etc. This is just another vehicle to try and sell the not-so-good Wargame Factory plastics.
Some of the figures look good for some other game’s.
Let’s Play coming soon?
hoping we’ll see one before it’s released failing that sometime in mid to late July with us I believe
Currently free postage on orders over a tenner. So tempted to pick up the rule book just to see.
I think we passed the saturation point for heroic skirmish level historical and fantasy games now.
