Warlord Fire Up Pre-Orders For SPQR Ancient Skirmish Game
June 11, 2019 by brennon
Warlord Games has now begun taking pre-orders for their new Ancient Skirmish Game, SPQR. The new Starter Set comes with Roman and Celtic forces, ready and raring to clash on the battlefield.
SPQR is focused around skirmishes, sorties and small engagements on the field of battle during the Ancient times. As well as being able to play through clashes between these forces you'll also find a campaign system so your warband and its heroes will grow and develop over time.
Inside the box, you're going to get...
- Softback rulebook
- Easy start booklet
- A Roman commander on foot
- 8x Caesarian Romans with gladius
- 8x Caesarian Romans with Pilum
- Caesarian Romans shields decal sheet
- A Celtic commander on foot
- 40x Gallic Celts & Celts command
- 12x Celtic Archers
- Celtic Warriors shields decal sheet
- Bases
- D6
It's very interesting to see that the Romans have very few troops compared to the massed forces of the Celts. Every Roman soldier was a pretty tough individual but I am looking forward to seeing whether or not the Celt forces can just overrun the Romans.
As well as rules for using Romans and Celts you'll also find that you can explore forces from...
- Imperial Rome
- Dacia & Sarmatia
- Iberia
- Gaul
- Caesar’s Legions
- Macedonia
- Persia
- Thebes
- Sparta
- Athens
...as part of the main rulebook which expands upon your offerings.
Also, as with all pre-orders from Warlord Games, you'll also be able to get yourself the Battlefield Sacrifice Miniature as part of either the starter set or rulebook offering.
I think this could be a good way for folks who like the Ancient World but don't want to pick up massive armies to get stuck into this period on the tabletop.

I’ll be giving the rulebook a go, definitely!
fingers crossed the campaign is good
Ooh can you get them big dragon Horn’s and Wall’s and they could be fighting around Hadrian’s wall.
Most likely pick up the rule book (and will deffo take a look at the command figures when they’re out) but reluctant to commit too much until I can get a look at the system. Mortal Gods has taken a big hit on my time and wallet so it’ll take something pretty exceptional to knock it from its current pedestal haha. If there’s a strong campaign/narrative focus it may tempt me, theirs a couple of hill forts near me – be fun to play out the Roman pacification of the Brigantes. Raids, counter-raids, one by one besieging and levelling the… Read more »
Ohhh historical skirmish… Hang fire; skirmish. 52 Gauls…. That, sir, is not a skirmish lol. Then again I guess by warlords standards
It does seem like a lot of Celts…but maybe Romans are just that tough in the game.
Why does no one understand that Romans used Gauls as allies? Yes 17 vs 53 seems a bit daft. But if 10 or so of those Gauls are allies.. kinda evens things up a bit.
I think I might just pick up the rule book and get the plastic romans from Victrix. I have been eyeing those for quiet some time!
