Big Four Of Late War - Wayne's Austrians
Over at Battlefront’s Big Four Of Late War, Wayne Turner is fielding the German forces. Or, rather, the Austrians.
For his inspiration, Wayne turned to the history of the 2.Panzerdivision. This division moved its home barracks to Vienna after the German annexation of Austria, and was mostly made up of Austrians from that point.
The force later saw combat in Normandy, engaging with the British 50th Infantry and 7th Armoured Divisions.
You can find out more about this force and how Wayne is looking to theme his army around them over at the Big Four Of Late War page.
The big 4 of late war theme is great. The Austrian history in the war is a good read as well
Always good to go with a theme
nice read
A 4 year commitment is a bit much for my group. A 4 day commitment is a bit much for my group.
ohh that german tank camo is just so great… tho for some reson the miniatures camo looks better then the real life one to me 😛
Now that’s how to do a campaign!
Great theme. Makes the immersion. Or even interesting when there’s a specific goal in mind for an army group. Love me some German armor
I actually never knew that about 2nd Panzer Division – great info there! Thanks! And MASSIVE KUDOs for not including a bunch of Tigers in your standard Wehrmacht panzer division list. Man, it always grinds my gears when people do that. Looks like there’s some historical research going into this project. If later on you feel the need for some “big cats,” Panthers remain a much more accurate option, but judging by the research I see already (AxisHistoryForum.com?) Wayne probably already knows that. (Now they just really need to get rid of those Soviet tanks on the American’s page). 😀… Read more »
It’s amazing how much one can learn just from wargaming alone!
Nice to see a different unit get selected for a change.
More warming more knolage.
Good to know there are literally years of updates to come in the series. I’m enjoying so far.
Some real history being shared!!!
Nice background read. They really saw some service during the war.
Going austrian? interesting…
This is my faction, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on what goes on with this force.
The British have their Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders (and still more), the German have the Austrians. What a great amount of opportunities for me get it all historically wrong 🙂 .
Very good point by oriskany about using too many Tigers. They were the exception, not the rule. On the other hand, there were Schwere Panzerabteilungen with quite a few of the great beasts.
I like this idea , watching these guys build there army’s . Makes it easier to follow and do what they do.
honestly i’d do the 21st panzer Div myself
I really enjoy these ‘tale of four’ type articles, it helps go through how different people approach the hobby and you learn so much along the way. The historical background to this Austrian force is really interesting, much more in depth than anything ive every done for my FOW German armies. Got these bookmarked so i can follow along.
I need to get get in some Late War action!
I’m loving this riff on a tale of 4 gamers. The article series thus far has been a lot of fun.
