More Astra Militarum Tanks Leak Onto The Internet
April 2, 2014 by brennon
Bell of Lost Souls have another leak from the upcoming issue of White Dwarf showing off the Hydra and Wyvern vehicles for the new Imperial Guard (Astra Militarum) as well as a few other snippets...
As you can see it's another variant on the Chimera chassis and certainly looks like it's going to pound the hell out of any infantry and aircraft that find their way towards your battlelines.
As well as the tanks the new codex appears to be close behind the release of the Militarum Tempestus and Orders are going to return. See what you can make out on the cards above and drop your thoughts below.
There was also this big shot leaked of a variety of different vehicles and infantry. See if you can spot anything new mixed in with all the old models and if you spy anything let us know that too!
Will you be picking up the new Imperial Guard Codex?

@brennon, for a moment, pretend that I don’t know anything about metallurgy, engineering, or physics, and just tell me what the hell is going on!!!!
Is this an addition to IG or a replacement for IG?
@warzan – the Imperial Guard are essentially getting a massive reboot and becoming the Astra Militarum. The change is pretty much in name only although of course they are going to get some new stuff to play around with. As well as the Astra Militarum they have also got a sub-codex called Militarum Tempestus which allows you to make an army based around the old Storm Troopers (but with new models etc). So in a nutshell – Imperial Guard are now Astra Militarum. I imagine (after a big discussion at my local store) that this is in an effort to… Read more »
“I imagine (after a big discussion at my local store) that this is in an effort to copyright the name”
Interesting move.
That does seem to be the most likely reason. That said, neither name currently appears on the list of GW trademarks so if you get in quick 😉
to be honest I prefer the new name
Yes, as said, the name change is pretty much to help with copyright. What I think is a slight shame, is that one of those pages, you have illustrations of Tallarn Desert Raiders / Mordian Iron Guard / Valhallan Ice Warriors / Chemdogs / Vostroyan Firstborn / Steel Legion / Tanith Ghosts and yet…you can’t really get the models for them anymore. I think it’s a slight shame that we ended up having the rather generic Cadian (although I can understand why this regiment ended up being the main one) and Catachan Jungle fighters as the 2 plastic kits tbh.… Read more »
You never know – we might see something like the upgrade kits we used to get for Black Templars and such coming back into fashion for the Imperial Guard.
Could boil down to arm, head and maybe accessory swaps for five men or something and I reckon people would snap those up.
GW’s style nowadays tends towards giving the options to make variants on the same sprue. It’s more efficient than doing separate upgrade packs as it means they only need to tool once.
Rumour has it Steel Legion plastic were seen but the guy might have just seen the new Storm Troopers…
Why GW haven’t made a duel Mordian Guard/Praetorian plastic kit; and a duel Valhallan/Steel Legion plastic kit is a little confusing, seems both plastic kits would sell like cupcakes.
you can still get Tallarns, Steel Legion, Vostroyans, Mordian, Valhallan, Ghosts & heck even Schaeffer’s Last Chancers – they’re all still on the GW website after the reshufflings of the past couple months and listed as available – under 40k > Imperial Guard (soon to be Astra Militarum) > Troops
With the rumours of GW and FW coming closer together, I wonder if we will see Death Korps of Krieg or Elysian Drop Troops as a Codex supplements?
I have to say, looking the pictures they released of the Taurox on its own, and in the current White Dwarf, it doesn’t really look very good (if you look closely, you can see that they screwed up glueing one of them, and the front left track, which is pretty much the focal point of the picture, is crooked). However, seeing it in that last picture, surrounded by everything else and in that paint scheme, it actually looks really good. The Hydra I have to say looks excellent. It certainly is very similar to the Forge World Hydra, and thus… Read more »
Wyvern to me just looks like a Hydra that’s had it’s barrels cut off.. Really wish they’d have pushed that design a little further..
Looks pretty straight forward, fair enough release. Kinda wish it was drastically different to the hyrda but meh.
Eh, is that a new (plastic clam back I assume) Imperial “officer/general/whatever you need him to be” in the Codex?
do you mean the chap pointing the power sword standing next to the old metal cadian commander? That’s just the standing officer you can make with the Baneblade kit.
It’s ok I only have to wait a few more weeks till codex Rough Riders is out
The Rough Riders supplement is ONLY for the riders. Please see Horses: A Warhammer 40,000 Supplement for the rules for the actual steeds, and a detailed history of their breeding. Many thanks.
Never! The ‘Guard is the ‘Guard, always has and always will be… Fair doos, it’s a little exciting but I cannot stand the name change and that wyvern is a little odd – whats wrong with a griffon or a basilisk? Armoured griffon would have been much cooler… Strange look to it, but mind you, so does the taurus and the new storm troopers… Just hope they don’t botch the new heavy that I’ve heard so many rumours about…
Not bad.
Looking forward to the new codex and wonder if GW going to have a new IG battleforce?
To me the wyvern is just ugly. Not in the good brutish tank way, either. Even the ammo boxes on the sides do not match the barrels. Look at the size of the boxes, and the size of the gun barrels. There is no way any ammo in those boxes fit the barrels.
I sold my guard about a year ago. I do not regret that seeing the new models coming out.
The hydra and wyvern kit seems rather straightforward. The only thing I really wished for was a remake of the basilisk as the old one just seems a little outdated. They could have had all the similar battery tanks be in one kit as well.
The last picture… The Taurox in particular, the way that autocannon is set up, if they were to shoot it, it would rip off the headlight, and do excessive damage to itself by ripping off that front bumper guard… makes no sense. New kits look great though, I really like that Wyvern, quad mortars? Want.
Ha! Well spotted 😀
It’s confusing and terrible design work. How do the Autocannon’s hit anything again? And the Melta’s are even worse, good chance the’ll melt the doors off.
i can’t stand the cadian mini’s, they have no character to them but i doubt they will be releasing any of the other regiments soon, which is a shame, but victoria miniatures makes some awesome mordian iron guard and and other regiments, they cost a bit more but the detail on them is awesome, well worth checking out
I simply cannot get my head around the taurox thingy, to me it’s just a bad model. Not sure I like the latest take on the Cadian scheme either, as with the scions, the studio seem to have lost their way a bit with colour choices. Other than that, the hydra/wyvern looks a nice kit, and the orders mechanic has survived, which is always good, guard were the first real army I collected that wasn’t red space marines. I want this to be a nice book. I do note though, that there are pictures of Valhallans and Mordians, who no… Read more »
Valhallans & Mordians do still have models (along with all the other classic regiments), GW still sells them online (in the UK at least).
I feel like over the past few months GW have really been cleaning up their act, coming out with beautiful kits that people in general seem to want, and Im seeing mostly positive responses on forums. Hope they keep it up!
I rather like the new Hydra/Wyvern kit. The hydra is a well established option for AA, and the Wyvern seems to be about saturation bombardment of light targets such as infantry, which should be useful against horde armies and with focused fire could even cause problems for more heavily armoured infantry.
More artillery options for ther Imperial Guard should please the treadheads at least.
The Taurox has two problems. First it there it has too much stuff on it. All those emblems, decorations, bullbar and whatnot makes the model look crowded. It does seem however that most of those parts are optional. Imperial guard vehicles are simple, rugged and primitive constructions, NOT moving shrines to the emperor. Second problem is the tracks. I can see where they were going with the basic design, it is an attempt to make a 40k version of modern wheeled troop carriers. Only they forgot the wheels. I have no doubt that converting the Taurox to have 4, 6,… Read more »
I’ve seen the sprue for it and I have to say I agree. Firstly, it is a lot smaller than I was expecting, and that scale, the tracks look even more ridiculous than they did beforehand. However, it does look like it would be very easy to convert to wheels (and pretty much turn it into a Jeep or Hummer type model) or even just a half-track. (I’m thinking of merging the tracks to create a longer track section at the back of it and putting some wheels on the front, although I’m not quite sure where I’ll get the… Read more »
zinge industries have got wheels in different sizes and configurations that were im going for mine soon as I find out the track sizes
I remember one weekender where Warren reckoned the Khorne Lord of Skulls was a turd .
The Taurox is the skids that it left behind , truly awful , but another chimera variant ? Methinks the Missus will be buying them for me soon !!
Is that the Vauxhall Astra Militarum?
Seems a take it or leave it release for me – a lot of recent ones have been. Nothing horrible (bar those plastic ogryns – in my opinion and riot shield ones look less bad) but nothing that inspires. I actually don’t mind the taurox – side guns aside the detail seems adjustable, but like pretty much every thing devoid of wow factor.
With Wood Elves and Orks apparently up next two of my main stay armies I am hoping for a wow factor release – although my wallet could do with the uninspired.
Well I will get it if Puppets War or one of the similar companies do an upgrade kit.
What GW should is make 54mm versions out of plain green and a sandy colour soft plastic x 50 a few out of scale tanks, put them in a bag with a label at the top and call them Army men for your children. Sorry Im not liking anything GW are doing now, they are turning 40k and Warhammer in to toys rather than wargaming models for older children and Adults. It makes me think alot 5 men of the new Stormtroopers cost £21 and the Sisters of Battle command squad costs. Even if I had the money they would… Read more »
Sisters of Battle Command Squad costs £44.60!!!
Big meh, for the vehicles.
I have my Krieg Assault Bde, thank you very much.
Alan Bligh FTW!
