Soldado's Burrows and Badgers terrain - Part the second! The Mansion of Marneous Blackwick!
so it begins.... again!
Spent some time this evening mocking up a spiral stair case, should be simple but it makes my poor tiny brain hurt 🙁
Getting the right amount of rise based on the material thickness is weirdly tricky (for me anyway, im sure theres someone out there that will say “yeah, you just do it like this…”)
The cardboard im using here is the same thickness as the pink foam I’ll be using to create the proper staircase so gives me a good idea how to proceed
So, thoughts so far?
How about using a bit of dowel or similar for a central pillar and use a thin strip of card or something under the step, leaving a little bit of an overhang. then you can space the steps vertically a little bit which will give you more space to make the individual steps bigger to accommodate the mini bases. I’m thinking like the little lip you would get on a wooden staircase where the underneath is boxed in. Hard to describe with text and also what do I know about building staircases? No idea if this’ll come out in text… Read more »
Hi Pete Real life has stepped in and ensured i’ve not progressed or even looked at this for a week. My thoughts on the construction so far are, that I’ll create the steps by cutting 60 degree wedges from the foam, the central pillar, I may well do the same way as the forge chimney, a milliput skin over foamboard former as I want for this ground floor element at least a stone stairway. As for the minis on the steps, the asthetics of how it will look are important and if the tread is too deep to allow a… Read more »
Yeah the recess is what I’m thinking. You could make some of those little step base things that have legs the right height to provide a flat platform under a mini base if necessary.
Then again depending on the height of the floors it might not really come up!
Keen to see how this comes out. I haven’t tried any intricate or challenging terrain features yet!
Im quite keen to see how this turns out as ive really not tried anything quite so intrucate as what Im planning here.
Also “step base”, whats one of those?
I gave it a pants name but I was thinking along the lines of these: https://www.irongatescenery.co.uk/product/mini-stands-x4/
These ones are designed to hook into the ladder but if you made some with legs of the appropriate height instead you could provide a platform larger than the current step.
I saw a perfect example on reddit somewhere but I can’t find it, it was even on a curved staircase 🙁
Got you, yeah they shouldn’t be an issue to make after all for a staircase you’d just need some foam off cuts painted so they don’t look to weird.
The main benefit is you don’t have to stress over the width of the steps too much
