The Weekender: Warhammer World, Movies & BoW Hobby Time!
March 29, 2014 by dignity
It's been another great week of gaming for us, and we've lots to chat about in this week's episode. Kicking off, we voice our thoughts on the face-lift that Warhammer World is said to be getting in the near future, then we have a look at the movies that have caught our eyes for summer 2014, before lastly chatting about all the gaming and hobby time we've had this week.
All i know is, they need to bring the Belly Buster back at Bugmans!
I second that…The Fat Bloke just doesn’t come close.
There’s a basic misconception: Games Workshop really couldn’t care less about ‘the community’. They are not interested in what we think, want, or hope for. Why should they? Their interest – their ONLY interest in us is to sell products to.
Thus Facebook is just an expensive system to maintain that isn’t really converting into sales. It might be a backward idea considering modern communications but we’re talking about a company that sells its marketing material (White Dwarf).
I honestly don’t believe GW gives a stuff. As long as they’re selling, why should they?
They’re very interested in making people think in a certain way. Which is why you end up with people making the most insane excuses for GW et al. You’ll notice *some* of the staff at your local GW have clearly gone through a really bizarre form of indoctrination which they spread to those gullible enough to believe them. It is indeed designed to create a “tribe” as spoken of in the video. So long as you invest part of you Self and your Identity in “the GW hobby” you are more likely to defend it irrationally. Happened to a mate… Read more »
@bubbles15 sorry for the long rant dude lol
GW have never utilised the “funnel” model which Warren talked about. Though the internet has changed marketing, GW haven’t changed. They did it their own way before the internet and they like to do it their own way now. They like to control their brand and let people come to them. This is why they’ve responded to a downturn in sales by re-focusing on the chain of stores, and this is why they don’t want to engage with the general public online.
Let’s see,
GW indoctrinate their customers … Tick.
Customers are gullible idiots … Tick.
Random words capitalised for no apparent reason … Tick.
The word “fanboy” squeezed in … Tick.
Assertion that the ones ranting online are the ones who really care … Tick.
Yep, it’s the usual poosh rant. Same time next week?
Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one..
Cards Against Humanity is available via Amazon. This means I have 90% of friends’ birthdays sorted this year 🙂
The Games Workshop community does not consist of some self selecting, highly vocal group of people who post on forums and websites. Of course GW care about their players and their products. What they don’t want to deal with is the tiny minority of haters who shout the loudest on the web. I can totally understand that attitude.
For a company like GW, they are better served by looking at what sells well and what is popular than they are by listening to the tiny minority of their potential customers who actually post things on line.
Agreed, to many people having bitch fits all the time.
Another great episode. If people haven’t jumped on backstage yet, they are really missing out. The painting and hobby tutorials are so worth every penny and more.
There is a trailer out for the next transformers. They have the dinobots in it. I will still wait until it gets to video.
You guys are getting better every week. Thanks for making the gaming hobby interesting for me again.
Read All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and you’ll know, why they are landing on a beach. The Edge of Tomorrow movie is based on that book.
And you’ll also understand that the exoskeleton should have been a full armored suit as it was in the book. However, you cant see how pretty the Full Metal B*tch (the girl in the film) is if she is behind a suit.
Don’t listen to Justin, Wolverine Origins is terrible and will haunt your dreams lol. It’s worse than Pacific Rim, which is also terrible! There’s a very simple reason why TMNT is getting made and it can be summed up as $$$$. As I mentioned on the comments to the news item, M****** B**’s production company specialises in rebooting old franchises. They come with in-built audiences and brand awareness so tend to be safe bets to make a profit.
X-Men was a bad franchise (until First Class) because it took itself far too seriously. It’s a comic book and it should have done what Avengers did and just gone a bit crazy with it. You can do action and comedy with a serious undertone well and the Avengers hero films have done that nicely.
First Class was amazing however and I think it’s pretty much on the heads of Fassbender and McAvoy for that – amazing actors bringing Xavier and Erik Lensherr to life.
The first two X-Men movies were good. X2 is one of the best superhero movies yet made. First Class is also good. The rest are rubbish.
I totally agree with @brennon on this one. The X Men movies were not good but First Class I liked a lot. I’d have preferred it if they had kept First Class as a totally separate series of movies rather than linking it in with the originals.
First Class was originally the Magneto Origins movie that was meant to follow Wolverine Origins. It got expanded into a broader X-Men movie to prop up the box office appeal. It was always in continuity with the first set of films.
Well that explains the cringeworthy Wolverine cameo then.
Pegasus Bridge kit looks great in 28mm but it is also available in 15mm for Flames of War, BGK or whatever rules you want to use in 1:100 scale.
Love the Father Ted Reference. We use it with IT Project Managers and other idiots all the time…

Warren, if you like the look of Edge of Tomorrow, go read the (frankly awesome) book it’s based on: All You Need Is Kill. With proper power armour suits 😉
When can we expect @dignity new Lunch & BBQ Bolt Action scenarios?
Gotta love Justin.
Great show guys, have to say that bridge is mightily impressive, I’ve been loving the game mechanics the demo game showed, now this. I know it is quite expensive but I may have to get that set at some point, it will be a nice project to build and paint over the winter.
I had to laugh at the barn yard minis, Dust actually made some as a laugh (innocent bystanders pack) and then packaged them in Operation Achilles as mission objectives (the general wants real food!). Someone even converted a cow wearing boots…
In Edge of Tomorrow, the few seconds of the trailer, you have NOWT idea why or how the beach battle happens so how can you possibly think “flaw” lol. Exo-Suits are to make em better at fighting, duh, that’s easy enough – what looks probable is they’re based in the UK and flew out to liberate France (probable) but their dropships were SHOT DOWN over either UK beaches or french beaches. I.e their intention was not to land on the beach but, more than likely, they ran into an ambush. Also… in WW2 we had aircraft yet we still landed… Read more »
X- Men is a good romp. X-Men 2 and First Class are outstanding movies.
Wolverine Origins is one of the worse movies ever made.
X-Men 3 was .. pants, but Prof X is KILLED in it, I don’t understand how at least his Patrick Stewart body is in the new movie, surely that body is destroyed.
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an exceptional piece of work, very dark as well. Some great scenes with a very specific moral message to teach your kids (and yourself) as well.
At the end of X-3 the comatose body in Moria McTaggerts lab speaks and she says the name “Charles”. It’s also subtlety hidden earlier in the film that her patient is actually Patrick Stewart with a beard.
Still a bad film though…
I got that during the end credits scene but the patient who got his “consciousness” … … looks like Picard with a beard!? …. .. I .. I can’t respond
It’s hard to say what GW is thinking. I’ve given up trying to second guess them, now I just wait until they reveal what they’re doing because some of their decisions just don’t make sense. For example, why bother to give the Imperial Guard a new moniker like the Adeptus Astartes for space marines when we’ve known them so long as the Imperial Guard? Was it to give them a name they could copyright? Why make a codex out of one elites choice before releasing the armies full codex proper? Who knows? Instead of wondering and not being able to… Read more »
@warzen you should re’watch your war films the troops always raid farms for food usually get chickens &eggs/milk.
That Could give units a +1 for moral or something for occupying area?
Being a wolverine fan since I was a young child I have to say I kinda agree with Justin about Wolverine’s movies being the most engaging. I found the X Trilogy just being a mash up of “how many ideas from decades of comics can we cram into a 2 hour movie?” and it just became so muddy you could not see the coolness through all the rubbish. Now for wolverine they seemed like they had some focus. Unfortunately for the first movie they lost their way by trying to fit “Star Studded” Cameos…..Cough Will.i.Am…..which ruined the movie in my… Read more »
No doubt that The Wolverine is a much better film than Origins. I still can’t say I enjoyed it though. Unfortunately I think we’ve seen the end of the days where a movie studio will invest a lot of money in a film that won’t get an all ages certificate. The recent WWZ and Robocop movies are good examples of that. You could do it back when the primary income came in cinema ticket sales. Now there’s just too much money to be made in the secondary markets these days to exclude that many people.
Another awesome show, apart from when you were talking about the monster that is GW. You quite rightly mentioned the new White Dwarf format ( not sure what was wrong with the old format), but failed to honestly critique the abomination that is Warhammer Visions, so bad is this format that people have been handing in their subscriptions in droves myself included, but that off course is your gain as I am now a very proud back stager. Keep up the good work but when you can, let us know what you really think of GW, myself I will always… Read more »
Sadly there’s no real gaming scene in Derry, would love for a hobby shop to open up though I don’t think my wallet would ever recover. It’ll be interesting to see if the rumour that FW will available form the GW site it would be great if I could get my hands on FW without paying the 12% shipping.
On the Edge of Tomorrow seems like a great movie, I don’t know why they use a exo-suit or why they have to land on the beach, but I know that exo-suits are awesome and for the awesome factor they’re allowed to use it even when they don’t need it. TMNT is stillmessing with my head, I don’t know if I like or hate the trailer, I will have to watch it to see what I get from it. Pegasus Bridge is THE piece of terrain to get. May be expensive, may be hard to build, but the result so… Read more »
The first thing that came to mind when you showed the cows was the scene from Top Secret! where they disguise themselves as a cow to sneak past the guards. If your going to have cows make sure you put boots on one of them just to see the look on your opponents face.
I love to see TMNT back. The Nicelodeon TV series is doing pretty good rating wise and i heard lots of good regarding its quality. Also loved the gritty and rough look the Turtles had in the trailer, very reminiscent of the flavour the original comic series had, which was pretty brutal and dark. who hours of Bay popcorn cinema, why not.
