Finally !
I was so impatient to watch it since your XLBS announcement :p
here is a serie i’m going to follow with great interest !
A great thank you to you guys, to provide us so much quality content, always thinking about new shows to improve your channel, for the pleasure of your fans !
Excellent, this is the kind of stuff I became a backstager to support,
Any chance you could convince a local Home Depot type store to let you wander around with a camera finding stuff that could be useful to hobbyists?
I always get in trouble for wandering off and looking at crap by the missus.
We collect and (Im a bit ashamed to admit but it’s obvious if you look at the set) – HORDE! all kinds of crap.
Like you I’m always in one of two states
a) If we are driving anywhere I’m always looking at terrain and thinking how to create it in miniature
b) If we are in a store (and I mean any kind of store!) I’m looking for stuff that can be repurposed for the table top.
This show, gives us the opportunity to show off all kinds of cool finds!
That would be a pretty cool show/bit. Walk up and down the isles pointing out what you can use and what for. “Here we are at the hall of wood. Perfect for creating custom boards or movement trays. Just remember if you’re going a bit cheaper and use MDF, you’ll need one of..” –Sped up walking over to the safety masks– “These! Now don’t skimp, they’ll be a lot more comfortable and you’ll look a bit like Darth Vader. Now you’ll need something to cut it with, personally I recommend…” –Over to the jigsaws and blades– “One of these, but… Read more »
It’s like Blue Peter, but with (model) tanks!
Good show, guys. Good show 😀
Great terrain, there fellas.
Now how’s that heat gun at making toast?
Great Video guys, I am going to have to go to the DIY shop now.
Though i have a couple of questions:
Could you perhaps list the make/manufacturer of the Sprays in the description? or a link to their site?
Next question is for your ploughed field have you tried doing anything for a not so recently ploughed? like including some static grass/flock/clump foliage to represent maybe some weed growing through? do you have any ideas or tips for that?
the spray dyes are from a company called Modelmates, their web site is http://www.modelmates.co.uk they also do pots of brush on rust which is probably the best rust effect I have ever used and well worth checking out also.
Most hobby web stores carry the sprays shipping can be rough though as no air freight is allowed for pressurised cans. I hope that helps.
I signed up to backstage purely on the promise of this video series, and I’m happy to say I am not disappointed.
This modular system has to be one of the best wargaming terrain ideas I’ve herd of. Its cheap, easy to make, practical to use and store and most importantly awesome to play with.
One happy backstager. Keep it up.
p.s Anything planned on the modular horizon after hedgerows?
Almost all of Hobby Lab is devoted to set on type stuff 🙂 As we know only too weel what it means to have space/time issues!
If thats the case this series should be renamed ‘Hobby lab therapy for war gamers’.
Heh I should have copywrited modular when I said it 😉 great looking show here
I think Henry Ford may have beaten you their @lafayette
Great video guys, looking forward to the next one.
Great video. Now i have to price up a heat gun lol.
Hi, I was waiting for this one too and was not disappointed A little thing that you didn’t mention when you scaled it up to 28mm : if you want the edge rows to look a bit taller, you can have the fields side by side and put the edge rows directly on the fields. It shortens the fields a bit, but it provides a bit more cover. … Come to think of it, it’s kind of obvious, but it’s my first post and I got excited I also have little edge row pieces that I randomly put on the… Read more »
Fantastic! Been waiting with baited breath for this vid and not disappointed. I’ve got the mats, now where did I put that heat gun……..

Great & useful!
Good work, guys, you’re perfect teachers ^_^
Going to be so e odd looks given out by b&q staff this weekend at the amount of carpet tiles being sold.
Superb tutorial guys, time to start building some terrain me thinks.
realy realy liked this video, great work
Crackin’ vid, keep em coming.
I love the format of the show, great to see you guys getting stuck in, takes me back to the videos of you making the grass based table.
What grass mat do you use now since GW discontinued theirs?
Really loved this video! I was going to get some of the carpet tiles when I saw them on the XLBS, but I’m glad I held off, I think I can do a lot better of a job on them now!
Another awesome video, Lloyd, you should be on Blue peter with those demonstration skills, keep at it boys
What a great show! The tips were really simple to follow and the end result was excellent. It’;s great to finally see the Hobby Lab series. 🙂
Enjoyed it. Clever stuff.
Great video, good tip about the heat gun (as long as you don’t get a mat with natural fibers…)
But will the weathering dyes run if it gets wet, e.g. someone spills soda on it?
Great video. It’s definitely got me wondering now whether you could use similar techniques for creating rice paddy fields as well for FOW Vietnam.
Whats puzzling to the DIY shop staff is not how many carpet tiles they sell, but that everyone buys only 1 or 2!
