Get Armies Ready Sharpish With Citadel Contrast Paints

Painting armies can be a laborious process so Games Workshop has now created the Citadel Contrast paint range which aims to cut down the steps needed to bring a model to life.
The new paints have been created so that you can immediately get a base coat and shade done on a miniature in one go.
After applying a particular primer to the models you simply choose the colour that you want and then drop it onto the model in one thick coat. As you can see it provides you with a level of shading and highlighting due to the way the paint flows onto the model.
It doesn't provide quite the same coverage as the regular paints but it does really cut down on the time spent painting a model meaning you'll be gaming sooner...something a lot of people would very much appreciate.
Thanks to a user on Facebook called Garro we have a few more images of what the new Contrast paints look like on some rank and file troops...
...and also some larger creatures too.
I think the effect is different from the classic paint schemes, bringing a much lighter and brighter scheme to life. It certainly gets my seal of approval though as someone who got turned off painting larger armies thanks to how much painting is involved!

Golden Demon is also seeing a return to the US. There was news last week that Crystal Brush is leaving AdeptiCon next year...and now we know why. Engaging conspiracy theory mode, Games Workshop are moving in with Golden Demon US!

I’m going to be all over this I think. Assuming they’re as good as reports would suggest this could really help me blitz through all the Boardgames I bought that have miniatures (of which there are many). I will likely continue to paint heroes, characters and monsters the “proper” way but for the untold masses of goons and minions that I have this could well be the answer.
Yeah that Citadel Contrast paint looks interesting.

I’ve recently moved away from large scale games because I simply can’t stand to have unpainted armies on the tabletop. I like to finish everything first which usually means I don’t get many games in and end up painting while everyone else is gaming. This speeds things up immensely but also opens up loads of opportunities for larger scale games again. Definitely something I will be giving a go!
The paint itself from the bid @phaidknott posted looks quite thin so would be interested to see it on small 3 and 6mm vehicles
So you also have to use their special undercoat spray to get the effect? If I use just regular primer does it not work? Work less? Work more? They sort of just look like a slightly thicker wash to my eye, maybe I need to see them in person?
I’d say the new primer has a gloss finish to help the paint flow over the models. They’re definitely thicker than washes and have way more pigment. They look almost like a thicker version of the Old GW inks.
Well it’s not the beginning of April, so I suppose that’s one hurdle passed. 😉
Still, I’ll need to see more about this before I start throwing down a GW level of dollars on a whole new system.

Interested to see how it stacks against Army Painter shades… I’m a slow painter, this could save me!
I’m thinking that there might be a great leveling in the playing field with the new tech as far as competition now. I will air on the side of cynicism and say that GW have probably figured the balance between our collective frustration and laziness when compared to competition painting. Gamers want damn good looking models at minimal cost in time to work paint. Glazes are making a hit these days as other companies are doing them and making bank. I wonder if this is just paint with glaze medium added?
This could be the perfect paint for painting lots of zombies, skeletons and boardgame pieces that may need a splash of colour.
It’s like a really simple variant of the army painter method as it skips the ‘quick shade’ step.
