Frostgrave Unboxing: Soliders Set 2
April 26, 2019 by dignity
Justin and Gerry are in the studio to check out the second set of soldiers for Frostgrave from Northstar Figures.
Giving plenty of options for customisation, the guys check out this set of soldiers. With options for ranged and melee combat and space for transfers on shields, there's plenty of variety to be had. Keeping in tone with the Frostgrave line, this set looks to be interchangeable with the other sets.
What army would you incorporate this set into?
These are lovely miniatures. And could so easily be used to represent your adventurers in a good RPG. I appreciate that some people don’t believe in miniatures in an RPG, being ‘theatre of the mind’. But this assumes that your mind is theatre sized. I’m less theatre and more Punch and Judy stall along Brighton sea front, so need all the help I can get.
Miniatures are useful in RPGS’s for large encounters, or where terrain is a factor to make it clear where characters are placed.
Social encounters and small encounters work fine without minis.
I’d like to see a set with some blokes, and some ladies – maybe Soldiers 3?
Workplace studies do show that a diverse team made up of a mix of males and females does perform better. 🙂
Could make a diorama out of those… lot’s of dead people 😉
When I get round to priming them, these women will be the backbone of my Rangers of Shadow Deep warband. In common with the rest of these North Star sets, it’s an absolute belter.
I do like these and hope they sell well for North Star.
Frostgrave,Ghost Archipelago and Oathmark kits go together like wargaming lego ( can’t remember where i first heard that…. ).All those kits are so interchangeable, they’re just superb.
Rather than just posing the question of compatibility between these and other sets, could you have answered, ideally by building some examples? I feel that most of the time the unboxings do not add value compared to looking at the manufacturer’s website.
I would have to have the other boxes to combine them
Actually, in case of Northstar, they have no images of the figures at all, instead opting for the box cover art while seemingly being restricted to a single image by their shop engine. Bad choice.
So this did prove to be much more informative and a better reference than the manufacturer, I stand corrected.
I thought you might have had the earlier sets in the OTT bags of holding. But for example, kit bashing the wizards and the female fighters might have been interesting, as it seems the wizards are again male only?
Good plan. I was going to wait for a female wizards box, but as wizards tend to be puny, that should work.
Great box, I think I would buy one eventually.
PS: epic beards are great, but be carefull not to have them rubbing the microphone! Hahahahaha
I will get a box of these, just so as I can add one into most armies.
The kits are very interchangeable, but the barbarian arms are beefier and can look odd on other bodies depending on the pose. I have this female soldiers box. The poses and selection of options is great, but I wish the faces had been a touch more feminine on a couple of the heads. I know female warriors weren’t all beauty queens, but I only mention it from an authentic painting perspective. If i used a couple of the faces on a male body I wonder whether they would look like a young man or not even notice at all? Male… Read more »
finally some females wearing proper clothing and not just a chain mail bikini
You should see the northern adventurers from Westfalia. They’re spanking gorgeous
You should check out the Hasslefree ladies. They’re just spanking. ?
I have some of the Hassle free minis, Kev sculpts some very nice females.
Oathsworn’s heroines in sensible shoes range has some great characters across different races if you’re also tired of battle heels. Which are okay to enjoy of course but it’s nice to have models that match male models in terms of the utility of their gear as well.
Check out Bad Squiddo Games as well. Lots of female minis there, either her own or other companies. Plenty out there.
Chainmail bikini in Frostgrave is a terrible idea… you’d need fur bikini to avoid frostbite…
IMHO, there is not enough head choices so I purchased alternates. I chopped off the integrated stands which IMHO they should never have been there. They make it difficult to base.
This is a perfect box to start a female Saga warband with.
Saga you say…
Love the variety on these and 20 figures is a good value.
Gerry’s final thoughts. Now where have I heard that before?
another great kit for kit bashing
I think Gerry summed it up here, it’s impossible to go wrong with these, they are wonderfully designed to all fit with each other it looks like assembling minis with would actually be fun rather than a ball ache as usual
