SAGA - Carolingian
Colour Palette
First thing I wanted to do was to get a good idea of the colours that were available at the time of the Carolingian Franks. I am sure that the colours that I will be told to use is pretty subjective but as long as I remain within a palette of consensus then I feel that the look will be fine.
So not really what I was expecting. I thought that there would be a lot of muted earthy greens and brown/beige’s. Plenty of vivid colours, and it appears that they were not frightened to match red with green! Awesome.
Further to my initial research I have found out that: the deeper the colour the more times that the fabric has been dyed and therefore the more expensive the cloth becomes. For example Black was achieved by repeatedly over-dying Blue; hence Black clothing was a symbol of status.
Keeping this in mind paler/faded colours will be for the warriors and levy, the darker colours I will keep for the Hearth Guard. I will add some deep coloured clothing to a warrior or two to indicate those warriors with aspirations to advance socially.
