Community Spotlight: Despoilers, Sleek Soldiers & Gotham Villains
April 17, 2019 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Abaddon The Despoiler by milmaa
We kick things off this week with a look at the work by milmaa. They have really been getting stuck into building up a Black Legion force for the tabletop and the newest model is this amazing take on Abaddon The Despoiler.
When I was scrolling past this in the forums I was immediately drawn to it. As a centrepiece miniature, I think that milmaa has pulled out all of the stops when it comes to making this model pop. So much work has gone into making sure that the focal points on this miniature really come to life, namely the face, the talons on the power claw and the arcane sword that he wields.
This is then complemented by some excellent work on making the black and bronze pop on his armour, framing an excellent commander for the Black Legion.
I even like the work on the cloak at the back here too, really simply making sure that it pops rather than feeling flat against the darker colours used for it. Everything looks like it has been hit in just the right way here with this model and I commend milmaa for the extra work that has gone into this rendition of Abaddon.
The base also deserves a special mention as this could have very easily been an afterthought but it has been built up in a nice way to frame Abaddon rather than stealing the scene.
Infinity Team by fourtytwo
Next up we're going to be switching from Grimdark to High Sci-Fi with the work going into this Infinity team by fourtytwo. Here you can see some really clean and exciting painting which really builds on the anime/manga aesthetic of the game world.
All of these miniatures were painted by fourtytwo after consuming all of our existing Infinity coverage. They then wanted to go forward and paint up their Infinity collection to a high level and I think they were able to achieve that. The smoothness of the schemes as well as the deep detail work and highlighting here is brilliant.
The choice of colour scheme is of course inspired by the team and their factional alliance but I think that being able to get such a good looking contrast between the white and orange is superb. This is really hard to do and I think that fourtytwo has pushed the boat out here, taking time and effort to try and preserve all the clear definition in the paint scheme.
This fellow here for example really stood out to me.
I think it's the work on the sword and also the points of light on the helmet that caught my eye. It has given the miniature that look of shining metal without having to use metallics. The orange with the use of washes and highlighting here is really good too, showing off the definition of his segmented suit.
Gotham Villains by doctorether
Last but not least from this week we're looking at the work of doctorether as he paints up this set of characters from the Batman universe and it's accompanying tabletop game.
Work has been going into painting up Two-Face and his goons as well as the Gotham City Sirens recently. I think, once again, that the painting here is a great exercise in getting the feel of the game right on the miniatures. There's a real comic book edge to the way these have come together, especially when you look at the brighter colours on the goons and Two-Face's white suit.
The same goes for Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Cat Woman here.
Of the three here I was immediatly won over by the way that Poison Ivy has come together. I thinkt he bright greens here have been captured really well and the deep red is a wonderful contrast to those bright colours. The use of additional flowers on the base is also a nice touch.
I also really like the way Harley Quinn has been painted, drawing on the look of her from the video game and adding elements like the faded dye in her hair. Overall, it's a great set of painted figures and a wonderful addition to the expanding Batman collection doctorether has at hand.
