Star Wars: Legion – The Clone Wars Begin
March 29, 2019 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games announced that a new Core Set is dropping for Star Wars: Legion. We're heading back to the prequels with a new Clone Wars Core Set for the game.
The new Core Set takes you back to the battles of yore when Anakin hadn't turned to the Dark Side and Obi-Wan Kenobi was the awesome General Kenobi! The set will offer up a chance to play as either The Republic and its Clone Troopers under the command of Kenobi or as the insidious Separatist Alliance with their Battle Droids, led by General Grievous.
As dumb as those prequel movies were, for many they did feature some pretty amazing moments and so it's great to see we can bring those brutal battles from the movies to the tabletop. The Separatists also get those awesome Droideka!
The new Clone Wars set is entirely compatible with the previous set and you will be able to jump right in if you know the rules from the original. Also, whilst Darth Vader was pretty cool, you do get to build General Grievous in FOUR different ways, one of which comes with all four stolen lightsabres spinning away.
We are very much looking forward to seeing what people make of this set. There are plenty of new options for your games included, giving you alternative objectives to accomplish on this prequel battlefield.
Uh Oh...Roger Roger!
As well as the Core Set for Clone Wars, two sets of additional infantry are on the way for those getting stuck into the game. First, we have the Phase 1 Clone Troopers.
Inside the set, you will find more of these crack troops, bred for war. They come with their traditional armaments, but you can also throw a few special weapons into the mix as standard. I really like the 'style' of the old Clone Troopers and I think there is plenty of room for you to go in and make them feel a bit more individual too.
On the other side, we also have a contingent of Battle Droids.
Once again, these are your standard line troopers for the Clone Wars. They come with their blaster rifles, but also some heavier kit for when they need to deal with dastardly troopers and their vehicles.
The future looks pretty bright for this aspect of Star Wars: Legion as there are some BIG vehicles you could include in this particular time period from massive droid tanks through to Republic fliers and troop transports.
"I'm very much looking forward to them working on a set of Jedi Commanders!"

Cant wait for this. The Clone Wars cartoon added so many great units so I hope to see some of those such as the commando droids. That series made me like this time period and a droid army is gonna look great. Glad they didnt decide to do the latest movies as resistance and first order are too much like the forces we already have and too similar to what we already have.
I wondered if they’d do Clone Wars until I saw Kenobi’s armour.
Very excited.
Hello there…
if you look at the articles there are a lot of Easter eggs in there. if you look at the command cards you can see that ‘hello there’ and ‘general kenobi’ are making one of those Easter eggs.
well played FFG, well played.
although I do notice that Ben is rocking the armour from the Gendy Clone Wars cartoon, which is interesting and also nice ^^
I hope to see a Durge
GeNeRaL KeNoBi
hello 9gager
No new system this year! No new system this year! No new system this year!
But wait! It’s not new… just a big add on…. I safe…
…IF FFG CONTINUES TO MAKE SW STUFF AT THIS PACE IT WILL BE MY DOOM!! *cries in the corner* *comforts beaten up wallet*
I haven’t started yet but once I do I could get clone troopers versus stormtroopers. That would be pretty heckin cool.
Also my wallet feels your pain
And I’ll be right there with you @sundancer ,tortured wallet and all.
last night some friends and I were playing a massive 2400 point a side game on Yavin IV.
one of us noticed and declared this and we all immediately aligned with our chosen clone wars factions!
we’re going to need a new gaming table!!
I’ll be getting both sides for this. Time to rewatch Clone Wars and get hyper pumped.
Guess I better practice my “Roger Roger” to drive all my opponents nuts 🙂
Ah now, seriously, some of us have to eat, pay electricity and raise kids. What the hell!!!! these look so cool, will they bring out a jedi force
I expect all the Jedi characters will come out eventually and all be leader/HQ choices and you won’t be able to make a force of just Jedi.
you could house rule with your friends however to have Kenobi, Skywalker and Tano take on 1000 battledroids but it wouldn’t go well for the Jedi I suspect.
Hopefully we’ll see a Generic Jedi Master/Padawan Commander Unit rather than named Characters.
A droid army would be good to roll? out
As much as I like the look of this, my concern is that FFG haven’t been pumping the releases out like mad for the factions they’ve got. Now FFG are adding more?
I think it’s a case of trying to cover the movies properly. They’ve pretty much done everything they can I think for the Rebel Vs Empire thing (although there’s always more they could work on) so it makes sense to try and get more people into the game with alternative options.
Games with just two factions tend to suffer quite a bit so adding in this Clone Wars era set means that people have more reason to consider Legion as a game.
I always felt that this was where they should have started, the prequels had the large scale ground battles embedded in them. We saw huge armies of clones and droids in mutliple locations led by lots of Jedi. This where Legion should have been.
I looked at the picture above and immediately wanted to have both factions – the droids because they look cool and Kenobi well because he’s my only hope!!!
It’s logical why they started off with OT. After all most people think OT fondly and those are full of iconic characters and moments so it makes sense that they would start with that. Add there stuff from Rogue One and Solo that take place during same era for extra options and it’s easy to see why FFG started with OT instead of PT.
Especially given that, for some, the prequals were their introduction to Star Wars and thus hold a special place in their heart.
Those people might now climb up on the Legion train….. Emptying their wallets into FFG’s, and let’s not forget Disney’s, coffers.
meh
Now we can have Imperial Storm Troopers vs. Republic Clone Troopers. Troops that can’t even hit broadside of a barn vs. troops that are actually highly trained.
Told myself I need to clear my backlog this year and focus on stuff….. this certainly isn’t helping!
My Legion Hoth army may now go onto the backseat in favour of Clones… I just hope we get get Clone gunships in the future! 😀
Those Droid Troopers……
Hated the films and won’t be buying any of this stuff.
I was wondering if this would show up. And I must say I’m impressed with the battle droids, thought they’d be a bit underwhelming but actually they’re really nice.
…. does this mean we get Darth maul?
I imagine we will at some point, probably as an Operative ?
Here’s hoping I remember losing my mind as a kid when he ignited the other end of his light sabre since then he’s been my favourite sith
That was an epic fight, made even better by a great piece of music to accompany it.And i completely agree about the lightsabre too.
Bet @warzan is seaching for the office copy of Clone Wars, as Ben say the films were naff but Clone wars brilliant.
@avernos which faction are you going for?
Way more scope in this one even though I have two oppened starter set for the origianal at home
Yup another project.
The prequels are hot garbage, but I do have a fondness for the battle-droids, and the destroyer droids are undeniably badass.
Now that will get me to buy into legion
Warning: I am going to speak heresey; look away now if easily offended over mature opinions about a bunch of toy soldiers set in a fictional universe…
Doesn’t do it for me; but then neither did the original movie in 1997 when I was a teen. I do however have a collection of rebel models from the range so far, but the prequel clone war setting doesn’t appeal. It will give me time to consolidate my current force (i.e. attempt to paint most of it) and maybe pick up a few more models if they are restocked.
Whew, I’m safe . . for now. If/When they ever release a Smuggler/Bounty Hunter faction for this, I’m so screwed.
Smuggler and / or Bounty Hunter faction ? Probably not would be my uninformed guess.Boba Fett ( and later on Bossk ) are Operatives though.Or just houserule among friends that your force is lead by BF,Bossk or any others that might show up ( i have my fingers crossed for Dengar and IG88 ).Plus Lando has yet to appear in Legion, although i see him as possible leader for a Cloud City force.
Will there be gungan’s?
Very probably, including that idiotic Jar-jar i would imagine.
We continue to be woefully short of vehicle choices.
I dunno. The Separatists have at least 4-5 droids that would qualify as vehicles due to their size, and the Clone Army has a good spread of walker variants, from the AT-Rt the Rebels got through predecessors of the AT-ST, up through larger chassis. Then you can factor in the likes of the LAAT/I gunship for air support, and if they were inclined the first Clone Wars video game gave both sides distinct hover-tanks….
Well hello thing that’s going to get me into Legion.
The Prequel movies were flawed it is true, but Dave Filoni’s Clone Wars series was excellent. I wonder how much more support for this range we will see from Fantasy Flight Games? I am hoping for a kit representing those awesome Clone Trooper LAAT gunships, and of course an Ashoka Tano model…
Wait, are these repaints or not? I thought Legion came with unpainted stuff?
Im confused….
They are unpainted, but of course these advertisment pictures show off painted minis
If this means republic commandos that would be beyond awesome!!
