About the Project

With the glorious re-assurgence of Runequest and Glorantha (I will be purchasing the slipcase edition tommorow) I will be painting and converting models building scenery (two boards worth, one based on a Dark Age style settlement to represent Sartar and the other some Greek/Middle Eastern style building to represent Pavis and the Big Rubble). I will be looking at both Mortal Gods and Saga/Fantasy Saga for rules.

Looking forward to finishing the building as this has been assembled for three years.

Bloody hell, how long is this taking me.

As I stated in this week’s XLBS comments, I have made a resolution to make some proper progress on this project this year.

Looking back at this project, it has been going on for over two years now and I have not made a lot of progress, I keep getting distracted by new shiny, NOT THIS YEAR I SAY (haha, who am I kidding) but seriously I have alot of stuff still to paint and many half finished scenery projects and with money being tighter I have resolved to focus on this for the majority of this year.

I have already painted 17 figures this year many of which have been base coated and had a wash ( only requiring highlighting) for almost two years shame on me. But they are done now.

These are Lucid Eye miniatures from their Ziggurat range, a great resource for Runequest miniatures, and are two characters that I use in my games as a player, sorry Gerry. The building started as a plain Adobe building made from blue foam textured with a rolled up ball of kitchen foil and painted in a boring beige/ white all over.

I wanted to give it some personality and to tell a bit of a story.

I built a stove from blue foam, with a bamboo skewer chimney, the hot plate is a peice of lead foil (tomato puree tube) . The logs are cut and carved peices of sprue. The benches are made from peices of sprue. The table and stool are made from scraps of wood. The ladder and front of table and bowls, jug etc. are from Iron Gate Scenery, I added a spoon from a slither of wood, in a stew made from GW texture paste with a few cork granules sprinkled on top. In the first picture on the beehives post I showed the first stage of this build.

A while ago I promised to put up a guide as to how I built the scenery shown in my last post.

Unfortunately I temporarily lost access to my photos, but I have recovered them now.

I have had a bad January for hobby not having picked up a paintbrush, so I decided to dive in to my favourite aspect of the hobby, scenery building.

This is where I feel truly creative and going back to the #warzan topic about art in the hobby, this is where I believe I create art.

I am just going to post the final builds but I have a load of photos to produce a how to guide for these items which I will post hopefully on Monday when I have some time off.

I am afraid I need to correct Jerry, the new edition of Runequest has been out for a couple of years with some great supplements also being released.

I will  look at what is available in future posts but I will only do one of these reviews post alongside a new painting/modelling post.

Yesterday I collected my Starter Set from my FLG, I have been waiting about a month since its release as the first shipment in the UK warehouse sold out within days and we have been awaiting a new shipment. I view this as a sign of Runequests apparent renaisance, more of this in a future post.

I am very pleased with this boxset, it is incredible value at only £30.00. The artwork and presentation throughout is exceptional, and the fold out format of the character folios is very user friendly.

The source material and adventures also make this a good purchase for more experienced GM’s.

Fantastic product on first inspection I cannot fault it, I will update you on my thoughts as I progress through the booklets.

Having rebooted my hobby mojo with my Silver Bayonet project (progress is being made) I have returned to this project.

I have loved Runequest and the world of Glorantha for almost 40 years now and have had several starts to collecting the miniatures from the first Archive models, through the wonderful citadel and Ral Partha ranges, but I really feel now is the best time to be building a collection due to the variety of models now available both the semi official models from Fenris, Infinity Engine, Mad Knight models and Rapier, as well as the many excellent Ancient and Fantasy ranges. This is my favourite way to build a collection, I can avoid FOMO and just pick and choose my favourite models from sculptors and manufacturers I like.

This is my primary project and I want to show of some completed models as well as what is on my painting table.

I have unfortunately been unable to do much painting recently as I have been looking after my mother who is rather ill, she is now in a care home and am returning to work Monday.

I have been thinking about this project and with the Spring Clean challenge being announced I felt this fitted that niche really well. I have been given permission to join the Spring Challenge and hopefully it will encourage me to make real progress.

I will now explain why I think this is a Spring Clean.

  • This is the resurrection of an old project of which I only have the two ships and the painted Rhinoman. I sold all other figs as unhappy with them.
  • Lots of bits taken from different extinct/on hold projects  (see below).
  • I bought the figures to resurrect this project about a year ago and had done nothing with them.
  • I am reworking this project in the light of the recent releases of Runequest and particularly Saga: Age of Magic, which I will be building all my warbands around.
This is the piece that first made me think of this project as a Spring Clean. This boat is from my original Runequest project. I plan to add further detail and enhance this model. Another model that I love but does not necessarily fit, but it is my game so here is the Warploque Troll. Another model that I love but does not necessarily fit, but it is my game so here is the Warploque Troll.
The one original painted miniature from my earlier Runequest project, the Fenris Rhinoman, which will remain unaltered as I love this figure. The one original painted miniature from my earlier Runequest project, the Fenris Rhinoman, which will remain unaltered as I love this figure.

I am starting afresh on a project that has been attempted by me before but I never was fully happy with the models.

I have a couple of pieces from old project and a while ago I bought new figures from Hasslefree for some of my characters/adventurers.

This week I started work on them inspired by tomorrows release of the slipcase edition.

The one figure I still have from previous projects, I could never part with him, I love how the skin came out. The model is by Fenris Games ( I will be collecting three trolls from Fenris at SALUTE). I will be getting most of my creatures from Fenris when he relaunches them shortlyThe one figure I still have from previous projects, I could never part with him, I love how the skin came out. Harrek the Beserk, Gunda the Guilty and Jar-El. I am really pleased how the bearskin came out (quite surprised as it looked bloody awful until I sculpted the fur) Harrek was always the figure I could not get right never had the presence. But this one has it in spades (Hasslefree as are all my adventurer models unless stated otherwise.Harrek the Beserk, Gunda the Guilty and Jar-El. Storm Bull cultist, Fellissa, Hanufa and Griselda, the last three from the excellent Griselda short stories by Oliver Dickinson, they originally appeared in very early White Dwarf and are currently available in a collected edition from Chaosium Storm Bull cultist, Fellissa, Hanufa and Griselda, the last three from the excellent Griselda short stories by Oliver Dickinson, they originally appeared in very early White Dwarf and are currently available in a collected edition from Chaosium
A Dinosaur (found at work a discarded Schliech toy, I have just based him as am very happy with the factory paintjob, thinking of buying more of these) two druids/shamen ( Red Box Games) and a Duck ( Fenris Games)A Dinosaur (found at work a discarded Schliech toy, I have just based him as am very happy with the factory paintjob, thinking of buying more of these) two druids/shamen ( Red Box Games) and a Duck ( Fenris Games)
Another survivor from the old project never finished though I have just recently carried out a few repairs, painted the sail, just need to weather it all. I will try out Mel the Terrain Tutors wet washing technique.Another survivor from the old project never finished though I have just recently carried out a few repairs, painted the sail, just need to weather it all. The wolfshead (Fenris Games) added to the model. Harreks pirate ships had live wolfs head on the prow of their ships. The wolfshead (Fenris Games) added to the model. Harreks pirate ships had live wolfs head on the prow of their ships.
A hill/island made from insulating film (I will do a tutorial when I make some more) this one was a proof of concept.A hill/island made from insulating film (I will do a tutorial when I make some more) this one was a proof of concept.
Another view.Another view.

I have pre-ordered a copy of Mortal Gods and will be looking at the rules to see if they will work. If I don’t like them I am sure there will be elements that could inspire me. Plus I get a load of figures I can use as Lunars. For the Sartarites I will be using a mix of Foundry Ancient Germans and Thracians ( combining and converting some of them).

When I visit SALUTE this year I hope to purchase Saga and Fantasy Saga rules as I think these will be better suited to the stories I want to tell. I need to incorporate Rune Magic into game so will be looking at Mortal Gods and the battleboards to achieve this. Also hope to get some scenery.

I have made more progress tonight and will post update once all base coating is finished and will continue to update at each stage.
