Mount Up On Tauntauns For Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars: Legion
March 11, 2019 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has added some new support into the mix for those playing as the Rebels in Star Wars: Legion. We're returning to Hoth this time around and starting off with the Tauntaun Riders Unit Expansion.
It really does smell worse on the inside! If you're looking for something to try and add to the speed with which the Rebels can cross the tabletop then these would be a good option for you. The Tauntaun Riders are perfect for getting up close with the enemy, firing their DL-44 Blasters and then, if required, getting stuck in with horns and claws.
Whilst you could see these as a means of charging into the fray I do like the idea of using them to simply harass the enemy, especially alongside some of the core elements of the traditional Rebel force.
Old Hands
As well as the Tauntaun Riders there's also a band of soldiers that have been battling against The Empire for a while. These Rebel Veterans are a go-to for someone wanting to keep the line steady against the onslaught of The Empire.
These teams are much more used to combat, able to deal with the brutal conditions of war and keep going when others would flee. They have great options for dealing with infantry and also vehicles too. You can bring the 1.4 FD Laser Cannon Team into the mix very easily to help pin down the enemy.
Are you going to be snapping these up for your own Rebel force?

Man these are sweet!
I don’t even play this game and I’m thinking of starting a Rebel Hoth army as a result of these.
lots of people have been hanging on for these geezers!
Those look really good.
From a wargaming point of view this is another disappointment for me. A guy riding a beasts that mostly useful only on Hoth and has a pistol. Hard to get excited. All the fluff they’ve released on the Age of Rebellion game would lend to a rebel army much better equipped. How about old Republic or separatist tanks or something like that? I know I’ll get flamed to death but I just wish for a less ISIS feel with rebels using the equivalent of a sci fi technical (the landspeeder with a gun on it) and such as this. The… Read more »
That’s a very fair opinion, but I think reading into their release decisions they were clearly focused on making this game “right out of the movies.” Sabine is the first model release not directly taken from episodes 3-7. Really with whole planets behind them, the Rebellion would have access to just about anything short of battleships, but their executive direction seems to envision the game being about the movies (up to bolting a medium machine gun blaster to Luke’s car).
Yep, I hear you. I think they’ve achieved that in the first year of the product release. I suppose I was hoping to see a bit of an expansion into a more balanced and varied approach with more vehicles and much greater diversity in species for the rebellion. Aside from Palpatine, the Imperial side has been what I would have expected. Its mainly the rebel side that disappoints me most. As you state above, a faction that can field a decent fleet of capital ships and starfighters should certainly be able to field more vehicular ground elements. Maybe even an… Read more »
I think Rogue One and Empire Strikes Back are the two movies that provide the best templates for a Wargame. I agree though that the Tauntauns, as cool as they might look, are a bit climate specific. I think to really make this work FFG are going to have to go “off script” and look at units either from the expanded universe or totally made up.
Ok,so part of me wants to get planning ( small ) Hoth themed armies for both sides, another part of me just wants to slip a few Sullustan mini’s into my regular Rebel Troops…Both will inevitably happen.
Not really a Legion player but the Rebel troopers are pretty cool looking models and “generic” enough that they could be used as troops for any sci-fi army. Given the inclusion of a few aliens I reckon they would also make fairly good Rebel troops for Deadzone or Warpath.
or what about 40k Genestealer cult ?
And if you replace the alien heads they could be useful as an Imperial guard squad.
That is … if the scale matches.
I like Legion a lot…and the minis are really good. But why they did not keep their releases within a certain theme (hoth/endor ect.) and mix generic ones in…is beyond me. Those rebels should have been out with the snowtroopers long ago. 🙁
I agree.
I do wonder if it may be due to them needing permission from Disney, because it is odd to see such a lack of theme in their release schedule.
Fantastic looking models.
I love these models – they take me back to my childhood!
