Hel: The Last Saga Announced As New Mythic Games Project
February 22, 2019 by brennon
Hel: The Last Saga is a new board game coming out from Mythic Games which is semi-cooperative and sees your band of survivors trying to stave off death from starvation, monsters and more.
Az from Mythic Games announced the game on a Facebook video which you can see HERE. They went into a little more depth concerning the game and the background for the game too including saying that it's set during the tail end of the Dark Ages where Pagans and Christians are looking to battle against the darkness as they seek to find Valhalla and the safe corners of the world.
The concept that caught my eye concerning the game was that whilst you're all trying to survive together you also have individual objectives that you're trying to achieve. You will have to weigh up whether or not the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.
Here are some of the first miniatures produced for the game.
The game is looking rather awesome indeed from this first peek. I like the style of the characters and anything Viking always appeals to me.
You'll be able to find out more details about it in the near future but it WILL be going to Kickstarter so keep an eye out.
What do you think of this first look at Hel: The Last Saga?

Are they releasing this to help pay for the other 3 Kickstarters they have had running at the moment?
Sorta wish I hadn’t seen this comment, those sculpts look awesome. Just went from high priority to very low. Ill have to do some digging before i say either way I guess.
Hel is going to be on Kickstarter Q3 according to an interview I just watched and they also have another game on Kickstarter coming in the Summer.
I would assume at least Joan Of Arc will be delivered by that time (probably Solomon Kane as well).
So,( admittedly i’m deliberately taking a harsh view for now ),they are ( potentially / possibly ) using the upcoming summer game you mention to fund problems / speedbumps they may be having regarding the other three.Don’t get me wrong,i love what Mythic do ( Leo is a legend in my opinion ).But alarm bells do sound ( and have with other KS ) when a company is turning over multiple games while others are yet to fulfil. That said ( however pretty the mini’s or however good the game ),my Norse mythology KS allowance will be going towards MB:Ragnarok… Read more »
The fact that a company has multiple projects at different stages doesn’t always mean they have cash problems, needing funds from another project to complete a previous one (what some refer to as a bit ‘Ponzi’). It could be that their business model means they need to churn overlapping projects so that the ‘cut’ they take from each is enough to cover their overheads and basic salaries; allowing them to keep and manage project funds and budgets separately. Compared to companies where I’ve observed the Ponzi-like behaviour from, Mythic are displaying good traits in terms of keeping people informed and… Read more »
True. It’s just a KS nerd ” twitch ” i get when i see / hear about multiple games appearing on KS from a company while others are yet to fulfil. As i say,i love Mythic and what they produce ( for the most part,SK just didn’t grab me ) and i by no means want them to fail in any way.I look forward to getting my hands on JoA and Reichbusters this year and long may they continue to create great games in the future.
Mantic are another one for having 2-3 KS schemes “live”, I must admit it can cause problems it seems for Mantic (Star Saga was VERY late in fulfilment, and Mantic seemed to “drop” it as an active project soon after fulfilment with no news on “if” they are going to do any future products for this line. Mythic also do a “flashpan” release in that their products are KS only, not for retail, and once done unlikely to receive any further products (not ruling it out, but they haven’t done any yet for their previous KS). So perhaps this makes… Read more »
Unless they fire/re-hire their artists & rules writers and assorted support as a project moves along they need to start a new project as the work on the old one ends .
The only difference between a kickstarter project and a standard project is that the latter tends to be invisible to outsiders until the marketing starts.
This looks really interesting. A nice twist on Norse mythology.
This just looks absolutely amazing. Really looking forward to this one.
Those are really good looking miniatures.
I know at least two of the Mythic Kickstarters will be in the hands of backers by the time this comes out but for me my main concern is that from the sounds of it it sounds like it could end up being something very similar to Tainted Grail that was on Kickstarter recently.
I’ll be intrigued to see more but yeah, just hoping it is more of its own game/ unique idea.
Sounds like Tainted Grail, which sounds like Kingdom Death Monster. Having said that, I’m most likely in.
I’m picking up on the Tainted Grail/KD:M vibe as well. Not a bad sub-genre to be in. As for the setting, 999AD in this setting means that Harald Bluetooth (son of Gorm) who united vikings around the time he also oversaw the introduction of the new faith in place of the old gods, has been dead ten years and Svein Forkbeard has been King of Denmark for thirteen years after overthrowing his father Harald I. There is still tension between the old beliefs that still linger and the new, official christian faith. Many ordinary people are melding elements of the… Read more »
Great figure’s like the headless prisoner ?
Mythic do fantastic games. And, despite recent issues with KS, they are a company I trust will deliver. I shall folow this with interest.
Now this is something I’m very interested in seeing! Some of tbe stuff thats come out of Mythic has been amazing so I’m expecting great things!!
Very interested to see how this IP shapes up and will probably get the base game as I love Norse fantasy genre.
I can see why some members feedback may be negative given that Mythic has yet to deliver a KS product to doors, but I have faith they’ll come through.
Can’t wait to get my copy of JoA next month 🙂
