Unboxing: Claustrophobia 1643
January 29, 2019 by dignity
Gerry and Justin manage to get their hands on Monolith's shiny new edition of Claustrophobia 1643.
Claustrophobia gets a new update after ten years and it is one hefty box packed with miniatures, character boards, and hellish tiles. The detail on the miniatures is superb. The only question that might remain is why does every axe have a secondary or even tertiary axe on it?
Did you play the original Claustrophobia1643 and are you excited for the new edition?

Ahh…. now it’s here…. facebook was a weebit faster 😉
Still don’t see what is so exciting about the game. Doesn’t look special in any way.
I’m not sure what you play @pagan8th but it’s a dungeon crawler set in a larger world, it would be like playing a GW board game set in the 40K universe for example.
I play a variety of games, including dungeon crawlers.
That ‘larger world’ doesn’t really feel there in board games, for that you need an RPG. Dungeon crawlers are more tactical exercises with a vague plot hook, not role-playing.
And the tiles are just so bland in claustrophobia, not enough variety. Had some experience with small tiles like those and there can be a warping problem.
But that’s just my opinion… and to each their own.
there is an rpg and a tabletop game, this was another strand to that world. I can’t get into the game mechanics yet as I’ve only really skimmed the book. Never seen a tile that small warp easily though generally larger tiles are more prone to that.
but like you say to each their own.
Village Attacks was a KS I backed by Grimlord Games. Tiles are similar size by look of it and warped enough to spin if knocked. I need to get something heavy on them for a few years.
This game doesn’t really function like a dungeon crawler. yes, it looks like one, but it’s more so a game of survival and attrition.
lovely work gentlemen
The boxes are not spacers, they can be used to hold the tokens or bits you will not be using.
We played this past weekend with my copy and brother and I had a blast. I did not own the original but had a friend over who did, and he agreed the updates are great and the clarifications in areas also help. Will need to find time to paint the miniatures now.
funnily enough when we were packing away I made that observation to Justin, I never thought of it at the time as I didn’t have it in my hand myself.
Glad to hear it’s good, I’m looking forward to getting a game in of it at some point
I want to see unboxing with Jerry and Sam standing…
Looked like Justin was standing in a hole 🙂
I don’t think this is the way kickstarter should be used. I know there has been big discussions on this before and I’m not wanting to start another one. But I will only fund a project to help fund a project, not to pre-order stuff, that’s just not what kickstarter is supposed to be for me.
Personally I agree with you, but KS has drifted away from helping the small guy to a marketing tool for the likes of cmon, monolith, mythic, privateer press, sandy peterson etc…
I’ve stopped backing things on KS… the wait is too long and often the first edition of the game on KS is little more than a beta test for the second print run that is also on KS.
Monolith has this kickstarter only sales system, Don’t like it. It is then impossible to expand, especially if one only backs the base system to see if everyone likes it.
Nice video, I hope my copy will arrive soon.
Mine is en route as well (currently tracking in Germany).
Mine is still saying this “The parcel is being prepared by the sender” since yesterday and the country tab is blank. The destination is also germany.
is SELLING on Kickstarter the future??? or is it going to be one of them things that we will just see the select few compony do??
It probably will be a mix from ‘true pioneers’ to pre-order webshop style.
I think that for a crowded niche market like tabletop gaming it makes sense, because you won’t have to spend time & resources on building a webshop and it helps test the market potential far better than any other option.
And as mentioned games can be too big for retail. This sort of thing also gives companies an option to do a game without having to fear of overstretching themselves when fullfilling the kickstarter itself.
I do agree. Kickstarter can be a god send for small company. I do love the big epic games and compony that come to kickstarter an the talking point that comes from it but my big love from kickstarter is the individuals and small companies that start with there first products that can expand with popularity. i’m a big 3D Printer so this method of using Kickstarter is so good to find new things to make. Some Kickstarters before they go like have a more or less certainty that they will fund, these are the larger of the kickstarter companies… Read more »
The small companies rarely if ever have a chance in any other situation either …
It sucks, because Kickstarter definitely helped the little ones.
Wow 10 out of 10 for the load in the box.
the figures look stunning as well.
I like it, especially the minis. I need to keep an eye out for this series.
Very Cool Looking. Enjoy these videos with Jerry.
Looks good. Might have to check out the KS when it comes around again.
Nice unboxing guy
s, great to finally see whats coming in the box. As one of the eight thousand i
m just waiting for mine to arrive, with so many different compos for the card lay out there
s no end to how many times you can play.
I didt release just how big the box was, i may just be able to sneak this past the misses stuffed up my jumper (i`ll let you know how it goes).
Did she roll a 1 on a spot check ?
Or did you have to save vs deathly gaze ?
😉
Those plastic mini trays look a little fragile. As someone who is painting their way through MB:P I’d prefer to see them swap out the plastic for a little foam. Something that won’t break and won’t chip the paint away.
