In Weekender Gerry (avernos) speculated that it was time the they brought out a Generic Imperial Guard set with Greatcoats and optional heads for Valhallans etc.

During lunch reading the online tippets of fiction for the upcoming Vigullus Campaign and guess who are a Garrsion unit on the planet……..

Does make you wonder if he is right

(I know Gerry your always right)

I would like to see a generic imperial guard return to 40K. It’ll give people more scope to make their own guards units and armies, instead of the cadian cookie cutter template that has become the norm.

@recon63 Couldn’t agree more.  It is about time the “generic” Guard kit allowed more options for on sprue unit options and therefore greater conversion potential than the Cadians which frankly are showing their age, especially in the post ‘Cadia go boom’ times.

Historical kits from Warlord and the Perry’s have so many more options for different unit builds.  It isn’t often that GW are behind the times so perhaps we can expect a better effort from them soon? (Oh, and Gerry is right, of course)

As much as I would love to see them, great coated guardsmen, they’ve been a rumour since I was at GW which is almost 20 years now. I don’t think we’ll see those in particular any time soon.

As far as GW being behind the times with the options for their builds @zoidpinhead they’re actually coming at it from the other direction. Multipart kits with a bucket load of options in early to mid 2000s were phased out to make easier to build and more bespoke looking kits. In their eyes they’ve progressed by moving away from those more complicated kits and making plastics that can be assembled in very specific ways to appeal to what they see as their market of “the hobby”. It’s a strange thing, but the old empire soldiers box had more versatility than the last state troopers before they were doubled tapped. When the Imperial Guard get a new plastic I imagine it will be similar to the stormtroopers, a core build with maybe a head swap option if we’re lucky.

@avernos I agree Gerry (again).  GW have indeed marched off in their own direction (as usual).  Is the rest of the herd following though?  North Star have some super fantasy mulitparts and all of the different boxes offer interchangable options with extra simple resin or metal conversion kits for even wider options.  Success like this elsewhere with the ‘older’ style multipose kits shows a reluctance in competitors to emulate GW’s “middle way” of making kits complex enough to be a faff but not complete enough to offer any diversity of unit types.  They do some pretty smart push-fit type units (e.g. Primaris Reavers) and I’d almost rather see those kits come in to offer wider guard unit options than have the current Cadians as the only viable choice.  Plenty of choices in Star Wars Legion and they might be the easiest assembly minis on the market.  GW just feel off the pace here for me.

They certainly pick and choose what is and isn’t a kit in a million bits.  I’ve just put my first Onager Dunecrawler together and that had squillions of seemingly unnecessary tiny bits.  My grognard eyes and fumblesome fingers aren’t really up to it anymore.  This kit is in what is supposedly the introductory pack for this army too.

Sadly I’d also agree with you that we are totally unlikely to ever see any real change in the basic grunt kit for Guard players.  Pity.

@avernos, @zoidpinhead, your very probably right , just though it was funny they were mentioned in the new campaign blurb, GW seem to be focused on the Sisters (no problem there) but given their current release rate, nothing is impossible but think we may have had more hints by now.

For those who want a alternate source of Valhallan etc substitures have a look at Pig Iron Productions

I’ve got a fair few painted up of these (funnily enough the Coal shuttle helmet ones painted in Afrika Korps style) in Helmet and the Winter heads originally to represent Hammers Slammers factions but already both have served as Guard in *th Edition games.
