I assembled 4 minis tonight and built bases for them. It only took 2.5-3 hours 🙁 I’m much happier with the bases than I feared I might be though. I was expecting to make a real mess of the wood. These minis are the con swag bag exclusive pirates from SmogCon / BonesCon for the past 3 years. Left to right they are a random peg leg pirate, Totally-not-pirate-Eiryss, Honest-I’m-not-Pirate-Reinholdt, and Captain Bones.
The wood planks are unsurprisingly made from coffee stirers clipped down and then filed until I have no finger prints left. I used a broken drill bit to put holes where the nails would be, and spli the odd end. The pieces of metal that strengthen up the “ship” are made from the seal you remove and throw away from around a pot of cream. Turns out the curve on the actual handle part is the exact same angle as the inside lip of one of these 30mm base which worked out very well for the peg leg guy. There are more bolt holes in the iron strips.
A bit of primer on these should make them work and it won’t take much to paint up those bases. I’m thinking Peg Leg’s metal support should be an old bronze/brass, and the rest of the metal should be old iron. Does anyone who knows more about pirates and old ships than me have opinions on this?
