About the Project
I very recently was lucky enough to get hold of a copy of MB's HeroQuest which I originally bought as a teenager when it was released in the early 90's. 20+ years have passed and I have often thought what an impact that game has left on me ever since playing it with friends. It is the first time that I had ever seen fantasy miniatures and the level of painting on the outside lid of the box was mid blowing and that was it for me. I sent away for the painting guide and the rest is history. This project is a chance to relive those old memories of painting my first ever miniatures, and seeing how my efforts turn out this time around. I can only remember painting the barbarian and dwarf models from the set back then, so that' s where I will start.

The Painting Guide from HeroQuest
This is of course the back of the HeroQuest booklet with some gorgeous painted samples from Mike McVey. I was truly stunned to see these and as to how the hell one could paint them that well and so smoothly.
Mike’s paint jobs for these samples on the side of the box lid are still some of my favorite miniatures that he has painted.
I would like to try and emulate this degree of detail in my own miniatures but have less of the bling in brightness and tone them down in contrast like the cover art by Les Edwards.
Here are the fearless heros ready to face the darkness and all the shite it brings to them in the depths of god knows where 😉
In short, I will start with them first as they are the best ones in the set.
The elf’s sword will have to be cut off and replaced with a new blade that an elf loving mate will provide me soon.
I cleaned up the barbarian first and washed him with some detergent and an old toothbrush. The applied a Dark Grey primer using an airbrush.
He is now ready to begin painting. The card art is what I will be basing the colors on for the miniatures in the set. I really like the Les Edward’s art and choice of colors.
