Search For Secrets As Full Blackstone Fortress Details Revealed
November 5, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop, in light of a few leaks towards the end of last week, revealed the full contents of Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress over the weekend. This new take on a familiar dungeon crawling format is sounding very interesting indeed.
Blackstone Fortress is going to be a one-to-five player adventure where you take on the role of intrepid explorers trying to crack open a Blackstone Fortress and uncover the secrets within it. These ancient superweapons from a time before humanity really took to the stars are devastating weapons, capable of obliterating entire planets, but they also hold plenty of other secrets too for those willing to search.
The set will come with a vast range of different heroes for you to pick from.
Each of these different heroes will be able to delve down into the Blackstone Fortress in search of its wonders. In a twist on the format from previous games, however, there is more emphasis on your characters changing and developing as you play.
With each 'run' into the Blackstone Fortress, you will gain access to new skills and abilities making you not just a better fighter but also a better explorer. The game even comes with a pair of Ratlings!
The artwork and design for this game are looking top notch and I've already seen a lot of people won over by the miniatures even before they've looked at the game in more detail. It looks like it is going to run off a unique dice system if those tables are anything to go by too making it feel very different from normal games of Warhammer 40,000.
Oh, on that point, Datasheets for all of the characters are going to be included in the box so you can use them in your regular games too!
Enemies In The Shadows
As well as the heroes you'll also have a set of nefarious foes to face too. The Chaos Space Marines are on the prowl alongside a host of other Xenos threats.
Games Workshop was keen to show off the new Chaos Space Marine designs which put them on par with the Primaris Space Marines finally.
You should also take note of the awesome Beastmen and Chaos Psykers that get included in the box and of course those new Traitor Guardsmen who are no doubt going to be inspiring a few different armies in the coming months.
Traitor Guardsmen are soldiers that a lot of people have tinkered with in the past and you can see some awesome conversions out there, but it is good to see that Games Workshop have some official ones to show off now too.
Mix these with the regular Cultists box that you can get and you'd have a proper motley crew to use in your wider games of Warhammer 40,000.
As I mentioned, the enemies you face also include some Xenos too with Ur-Ghuls stalking the shadows and the strange Spindle Drones preparing to defend their installation. It's all very 'Halo' with the Spindle Drones reminding me of the Sentinels.
Many Stories To Tell...
The focus for the game is on building a new narrative and helping to shape the future of the Warhammer 40,000 with this release. Unlike with Silver Tower and Shadows Over Hammerhal, it looks like we're going to be getting some support for the game going forward to which is always a plus for people dropping money into a big project like this.
I would have liked to have seen them do the same for Warhammer Quest in the Mortal Realms but hopefully, this provides a stepping stone for them to do so.
Will you be getting Blackstone Fortress?

I think those Squats are Ratlings, but they look pretty cool 🙂 Might actually get this at some point
You are indeed right on that…I think I was just hoping haha.
The bare feet are a dead giveaway. 😉
Never give up on the Squat dream!!
Sing it brother
Haha yeah I was the same at first: omg I see 2 shorter characters, SQUATS!!!! Oh no… 🙁
Nothing wrong with that Ben , I was hoping too 🙂
Dungeon delving with laser guns what more can we exspect, the new figures are looking brilliant, spacehulk II.0?
I like the look of the Chaos psykers; I think they’d make a great base for converting daemonhosts from. 🙂
Some nice looking minis on show. Who’s the fella with the purple frock and crazy hat?
A Navigator.
Crikey. In my mind they still have massive foreheads like that Rogue Trader mini (that I’ve just googled and really hasn’t aged well).
his name is Capt Spiritlevel and he is very handy for telling whether or not something is truly level, the little notch in the middle really needs a drop of green ink in there and you’re sorted 😉
Likes: level surfaces
Dislikes: doorways
Dislikes: pyramids
I think I read somewhere, that the mutations of the different houses of the navis nobilitae actually have different physical manifestations. But I am not sure if that is actually part of the canon. Though no one inside the universe actually really knows anything solid about navigators either. So we are probably fine.
In this lad’s case, a whopping set of ears then.
LOL! So he would be listening to the currents of the warp instead of seeing them. But like with the third eye you’ll die if you look at them, hence the ridiculous headgear.
I’ve spent £250 on my wife’s Christmas present already, but if I take it back I can buy this instead. It can be fun for all the family. What do you guys reckon, will I get away with it…? Maybe not.
How fast can you run? 😉
Or you could try: “Honey it’s for the Emperor, you have to understand that’s so much more important than your stuff.”
Can’t argue with that,….. maybe 😉
if your gonna do it don’t forget to buy her a tea towel or a new iron as a replacement present she’ll thank you for it in the long run i’m sure lol you’d probably need to sleep with one eye open for a while afterwards but whats sleep when you have the joy of a new game and figures?
try dropping hints regards your Christmas present from her, would she say you;ve been naughty or nice this year?
You’re the guy who buys power tools for his wife, right?
I love how the team of Heroes have brought their crazy religious uncle along for a laugh ‘Here they come, quick, show them your scary book!’. Seriously can’t wait for this game, been itching for a good new dungeon crawl game. That’s a hefty amount of stuff in that box as well.
Any idea on RRP?
£95
Cheers.
Does anyone else think the head Rogue Trader chap looks like @sundancer ?
Is there a Sgt Plumbline in the seat
Na, I shave a bit differently 😉
Clearly you have a long lost warp-displaced twin brother. ?
Hush…. we don’t talk about that… otherwise the Inquisition has to pay you a visit. 😉
It’s great to see GW exploring this kind of territory but I’d really hoped they would have gone further with their new designs.
The big automota and the Martian/Navigator are very cool but there isn’t really anything else here that we haven’t seen before. It would’ve been more interesting to see the Eldar or Kroot depicted in a non codex way and the preacher and halflings look very familiar.
Don’t mean to criticise the models so much as the lack of willingness to break from old tropes.
I’m more disappointed by the fact they went with? Chaos as the primary adversary. Again. I just don’t really see how Chaos Space Marines would be the first choice as the main villains in this particular setting. I’m kind of OK with the lack of originality in the heroes team – 40k is the Imperium’s story really and these are, mostly, very Imperial. I think it nicely captures their hypocrisy too – the inclusion of pretty much all outlawed allies – Xenos, Mutants, weird tech. Maybe the Kroot could have deviated a little more from what we know but I… Read more »
I have to agree. This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to introduce some weird and wonderful aliens, pirates, scavengers and what have you.
On top of that I can’t get past the idea that the traitor guard look like a blood bowl team!
Remember, they said that there will be more characters, villains, etc. as future expansions.
My immediate impression of the marketing, look and gameplay premise of this game is that it’s designed with as many expansions as possible in mind. I suspect this might be aimed directly to @Warzan and his thirst for a tome of ‘dungeon’ critters.
It’s solo THANK THE EMPEROR!!! This looks like it might actually be what Silver Tower should’ve been.
What Silver Tower should have been? What, 40k based?
That looks really good and being able to play solo is also plus. Then again why not share experience with others like family or friends.
Looks like GW have knocked it out the park again, this looks pretty awesome. The “hero” miniatures (I use the term hero loosely) all look absolutely stunning. I especially like the Rogue Trader, he has a real Victorian look about him. If I had to really offer a criticism it would probably be “yet more Chaos”. It seems to me that the Blackstone Fortresses are a great opportunity to play around with the universe, throw in something a little more unique, something that might never be used as an army in 40k. Instead the Blackstone Fortresses are inhabited by Chaos.… Read more »
The minis are really nice, and it does tempt me (beyond my love of kroot) but my reservation is on the game play… GW games lately don’t really do it for me especially these one off box offerings and it is a hard sell for mini that don’t necessarily have a definite use and a game that probably won’t see even semi-regular play
Day one ! Can’t wait . Love every miniature in the box set . Love the robot
