Welcome All to another Hobby Weekender!

Intro blurb shamelessly cut and paste below:

To the uninitiated, this is a virtual hobby hangout here on the forum. It is something fun and silly with a little more ‘oomph’. Its not just show and tell with your models. Its chatting, getting to know one another, community building. Think of it as a sort of club like hobby session. Everyone is welcome, of course, and there are a few rules to abide by. Let it go as OT as you like with chatting with folks. BoW is a special, unique community, and this little weekly thread is a tradition on these forums. Though not for everyone, if you are still reading and keen, then it is for you. If not, best click out.

We do a few things on this thread that usually lasts from Friday or Saturday til about Wednesday or Thursday. Hosting alternates between myself and @mage though on occasion others have hosted too. Our say is final in this silly little corner of the internet. Fear not, for this is your safe place against the outside world of flame wars, trolling and all that other crap.

    (1) Make a pledge for the weekend. It can be painting, assembly, priming, converting, background writing, terrain, you name it. Just gotta be relevant to hobbying or gaming.

    (2) Chat with people. Be friendly. Do get to know one another, be kind, provide positive reinforcement and constructive criticism. Do not post up your real name, credit card, bank details or home address info.

    (3) I will list out questions. Answer them. Longer answers = more points. Also, points are being assigned to something else as it confused some folk for a while.

    (4) Awards will be given out at the end of the thread and you shall be awarded XP, added to your account profile by the wonderful @lancorz . Think of him as the ever vigilant Batman of the forums who keeps a careful eye on the status quo, but also acts in a way, like Alfred; with a calm disposition and the attentitive nature of a concierge.

    (5) Scottish Pub Law rules: no discussion of religion or politics**. Keep it clean. Behave. Be nice, be kind. Walk away if you get angry. Don’t be a dick.

Also there are bonuses for the following ‘Achievements’:
    · Most Valuable Player (most engaged with topic)
    · Fire Starter (topic starter, encourages the member circulation)
    · Hobby Champ (most hobby over the weekend)
    · Meme Lord (ryhmes, funnies & memes)
    · Pun-Tertainment (best pun)
    · Brush Licker (painting & terrain)
    · Headliner DJ (most eclectic music)
    · Armchair Commander (weekend battle reports)
    · Community Usher (helpful & engaged)
    · Storyteller (weekly discussion & story)

And there are weekly questions to get the conversation going. So, for this week:

    1.    What’s in your reading pile at the moment (podcasts totally count as reading in time-poor 2018 BTW)

    2.    Prompted by the antics of @mage last week, have you ever considered an ‘iron hobby’ challenge where you set yourself a short deadline to churn out a lot of hobby output? If you were going to attempt one, what goals would you set yourself? What rules would you put in place?

    3.    Are bespoke miniatures your thing or do you prefer large quantities of homothetic plastic minis? That is, if you had credit for a big online miniatures store, would you prefer to use it for a few low-quantity run miniatures form a small manufacturer, or a higher number of plastic miniatures from a larger manufacturer? No right or wrong answers, just keen to hear people’s thoughts. 10 years ago I would have gone for the ‘more is more’ option but nowadays I’m personally morre drawn to things that are a little more individual 🙂

As an aside, we are currently on a ‘watch and act’ warning for a nearby bushfire (because Australia), so my availability and response capacity for the first couple of days of this thread might be a little more variable than usual. Don’t stress though, I’m sure all will be fine 🙂 And If I do go for a couple of days without responding please just assume that it’s likely internet or phone lines being knocked out rather than anything untoward 😉

    1.    What’s in your reading pile at the moment (podcasts totally count as reading in time-poor 2018 BTW)

Since Mr. Pratchett is dead, my Shadowrun and Star Wars collections being nearly completed I’m all out of books. So my reading pile is literally empty. Even with counting podcasts because I usually have them heard the day they are out.

    2.    Prompted by the antics of @mage last week, have you ever considered an ‘iron hobby’ challenge where you set yourself a short deadline to churn out a lot of hobby output? If you were going to attempt one, what goals would you set yourself? What rules would you put in place?

I did so three times but not only I. There is a german hobby blog/magazine (a smaller more hobby version of Beasts of War) called Magabotato and they do a Paintathon.  Paintathon being a butchered word for painting marathon. The goal is to paint 42 miniatures in one month. 42 because a marathon is 42 km in length and the month is usually July. In 2017 I did some Chaos Space Marines. See all painting Stages here. In 2018 I went with old school Space Orks but since this year was so friggn hot painting was a lot less fun. See results here. Since a lot of participants had trouble with the heat we did a second paintathon in Orktober but I didn’t have a single project this time but kept to SW:L. Those results had bee seen here 😉 The only rule for the Paintathon is: have fun. 42 is a goal but not mandatory. Some stay below and other blow way past that because they are painting machines. Sample pictures of past Paintathons:

    3.    Are bespoke miniatures your thing or do you prefer large quantities of homothetic plastic minis?

Could you rephrase that question please? I always thought that I’m quite good at English but I really can’t make any sense from that. Sorry.

    Hobby Pledge

As stated in my Temple Ruins project I got a new set of Modular Dungeon parts so I’m thinking on “what to do” with it.

    By Jove it’s Friday!

I’m feeling much more motivated this week, so let’s see if I can’t get more done?

My pledge will be to finish those Orcs (they’re actually varnish-drying as I type this). Then back to my Elves.

@evilstu stay safe! We’re under a total fire ban here too, though RFS has been working fairly constantly around here the last 12 months with clearance burns.

Don’t worry @sundancer I’m a native English speaker and I’m only guessing at what @evilstu has typed for question 3 ?

    To whit:

    Reading List?
Not much at the moment. I don’t read nearly as much as I used to. I should purchase the second book of the Kingkiller Series by Patrick Rothfuss. I got the first book for free on Audible when it was recommended to me. Also I’ve been wanting to find the next part of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight series. But I’d rather buy the book than listen to it, since I read the first book.

    Painting Challenge?
I’ve never tried one… if I were? I’d want to take a week off work to have to myself just to paint. I’d need plenty of music and a really good painting setup to work at. Better than the desk in the third bedroom I have now… The goal would probably be set around a theme: paint all my Fantasy Hero characters, and a stack of enemies. Or pick a box and paint every mini in the box. Then pick another box etc.

Miniature style? (Is that what you’re asking?!?)
    Wow, mathematical!

It depends on what they’re for: characters or minions.

For minions I don’t mind using rank-and-file mass produced minis, as they’re meant to be a mass. Space Marine troops, Goblin or Skaven hordes, even a throng of Dwarves.

Characters though should be unique. They don’t have to be made to order, though conversions are fun, just stand out from the crowd.

Did I understand the question correctly? ?

I’ll be back with music later… gotta catch up with the Fighting Fantasy Halloween RP first ?

Dammit! I think this heat got to much for the varnish. Two coats and it’s like winter frost:

I’ll try a couple of ‘fixes’ see how they go.

    @mage you silly sleep-deprived sausage!

@sundancer 42 seems like a good number to me. 42. Almost seems… meaningful. In an important, valuable to life kind of way…

Good work on your Orks and Chaos from previous paintathons too!

My Mantic Orcs are done. I just went ahead, essentially dry-brushing all over the miniatures with Olive Oil. They’re a little oily now, but I expect that some of that will dry out. Tomorrow I’ll go over them with some paper towel to remove any left over.

Pic’s or it didn’t happen!! (Same pics as I posted in the Orctober thread though, soz!)

I’m currently re-reading Feet of Clay by Saint Pratchett. We gave him a sainthood right? After that I may go through American Vampire 3-7.

For hobby marathons I use my handy painting handle, cures all kind of ills.

I of course prefer bespoke models even in rank and file but I’m far too lazy to do much about it. GeeDubya plastic kits are great for it as you get so many options.

I’m not planning on any painting this week but I am playing some 40k tomorrow. Been a while since I had the Deathguard out. I’ve even managed to get my Gellerpox Infected into my list. Also, as my opponent is running Grey Knights I’ve made sure to bring some demons.

My pledge to you, fellow hobbyists, will be to finish my commission and begin, in earnest, work on my future avatar piece.

I’m currently rereading Perdido Street Station when I am motivated to in time while not painting minis/listening to music.

As far as an Iron Hobby challenge I think that there isn’t much that I’d push too hard on with painting. I try and hit the highest possible level of my current experience depending on what I’m aiming at accomplishing. Now, building is a different matter. I’d set forth a custom base building goal that might build on itself close to what might be a mini diorama (if I had the funds and space that is).

Bespoke versus the horde, it’s a tough call that leaves me ambivalent. Bespoke is good as far as getting a unique piece but it kills the opportunity for exploring paint work. Hordes of drones are good to make new variants and play with colors. I agree with previous statements about characters versus line troops.

@evilstu and @rayzryr I’m sorry to hear about the fire threat. Here in my state we’ve already gone through fire season and had the drifting smoke from further west. With winter here I’ve seen snow already and average daytime temperatures are dropping toward freezing slowly (having written that watch it be in the 60s Farenheit tomorrow).

@mage Chazwozzer? I don’t believe that I’ve indulged in the right kinds of depravity to be called that.

@rayzryr There will be NO pictures of whatever kind of depravity required to be called a chazwozzer from me. Good work on the fix for the overspray though it does lend to the idea you may have ulterior motives to oiling down hunks of ork flesh that you’ll be surrounded by.

@woldenspoons Pratchett got beautified? Well, where’s the committee for Gerard Butler? I think he was annointed on one of the Hobby Hangouts.

@brennon or @lancorz Can you please confirm the canonization of St. Gerard of the Sacred Brush?

    1) Just finished reading The Labyrinth Index, latest in Charles Stross’ increasingly apocalyptic Laundry series, got through the final volume of The Greatcoats series by Ian de Castlemere via my Audible account (already used this months credit – Realmslayer, the Brian Blessed-voiced adventures of Gotrek Gurnnison in the Age of Sigmar…), volume 74 of Bleach- the  long running Shonen manga series that if nothing else always looked achingly cool. The reading pile otherwise is a bit expansive to list here, but I have books 2 & 3 of Paul Cornwell’s Shadow Police I want to finally get through. podcasts? Currently listening to the latest Roboskullcast, a retrospective of Robotech from along-time fan and someone new to the franchise, Limited Insertion- an Infinity rules podcast in sub-30 minute episodes, Chain Attack – supposedly a WarmaHordes batrep podcast but I listen mainly for the banter, Mayacast – a much longer magazine format Infinity podcast. those should get me through a good chunk of painting tomorrow 🙂

    2) Given I don’t get to paint much during the week I try to do something like this most weekends, setting aside one day just for hobby  with set goals to work through. I have tried for more hard &fast targets if painting over a longer period, say if I have a long weekend or a week off, maybe taking a few days or setting a target for the end of the week.

    3) I’m a bit of both. Trying to find suitable replacements for the minis in my Warhammer Quest set (Classic Edition) is what brought me back to the hobby after getting burned out by the rapid shift from 4th to 5th to 6th editions of 40k. Being directed to the likes of Mierce Miniatures, Tercio Creativo and their ilk, and the sort of finely crafted minis they came up with reignited my passion for the hobby, really distilled when I discovered Infinity, and entire game utilizing gorgeous bespoke minis but in metal not resin or plastic, some thing they remain committed to. And I still like finding minis from companies that can make great heroes for larger armies that are more mass-produced (see my 200+ IG army and many, many space marines…). Hells, a good chunk of the kickstarters I’ve backed have been for new and interesting minis that I can find uses for. In the last few weeks alone I’ve gotten female versions of all four Imperial Assassins, and Indigo ford from Twisted, a superb steampunky-take on a gender-bent Indiana Jones. no idea yet what I’ll use her for but i’m sure something will come me 🙂

Now, hobby. I got my next batch of 40k Conquest issues this week so am building the Librarian as a member of the Deathwatch from the Raptors chapter. Going to try and finish building him during tomorrows Weekender show, and hopefully get him primed up. Then I want to take a look at those Wolves again, thinking a black wash down the centreline of the fur should do the job then I can apply a drybrush. also got something to experiment with – had the latest Assetdrop supplies box arrive as well this week, and it included three of Superdork’s colourshift paints. I fancy trying them on the energy blades of my Deathwatch, so will post some WIPs of those as I’m intriqued to see how they work…..
