Mice And Mystics Movie Announced By Dreamworks
October 25, 2018 by cassn
Jerry Hawthorne's Mice & Mystics board game is set to be transformed into a big budget Dreamworks animated movie! Variety.com made the exclusive announcement yesterday concerning the RPG game's feature film future.
So far Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, 2006) and David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2, 2016) have been announced as director and co-writers, with Roy Lee (IT, 2017) and John Berg producing.
Mice and Mystics is a co-operative roleplaying story about a group of loyal royalists who aim to stop the evil Vanestra from destroying the monarchy. In order to escape her minion's clutches, they are turned into mice, and must travel the vast expanse of the giant castle, battling those who get in their way, in the hope they can get to the King and warn him before Vanestra carries out her evil plan!
Mice and Mystics is a family RPG game that continues to be incredibly popular and has spawned several expansion modules. Given the current team announced by Dreamworks, I imagine the movie will, at times, focus on the darker elements in the storyline. However, this will still be a family film, and I can see a resurgence in popularity for the original RPG game when it is eventually released.
What game would you most like to see turned into a big screen film? Tell us below!

can’t wait to see this 🙂 love Mice and Mystics 😀
Great game. Think I might pull it off the shelf and start playing it again.
Q. What game would you most like to see turned into a big screen film?
A. Scythe, Dead of Winter, Legends of Andor, Super Dungeon Explore, Magic The Gathering Innistrad, Holding on Billy Kerr, Ashes Rise of the Phoenix Born…
But enough of that, more importantly, – excellent news and congratulations to Jerry Hawthorne, Colby Dauch and all the Plaid Hat Games team – hope the film respects the world and characters you have created.
A: Joan of Arc with that amazing dragon would be awesome too!
Could be fun.
What game would I want to be a movie, hm what about:
SIlvertower/Hammerhal, Space Hulk/Calth/Prospero, Human Interface, Galaxy Truckers, Munchkin, Scythe, Wanderer: The Cult of Barnacle Bay and Starship Samurai.
the story does sound interesting for a game an a film would be brilliant.
Amazing. I can’t really think of anything else to say. How long does it normally take to make something like this, a year? Two? I wonder if my daughter will be old enough to see this at the cinema when it comes out
Well, if there was one company that could pull it off, I am sure that would be Dreamworks Animation. Hopefully the writing does not suck
Personally I would have like a short show of M&M for I think it would work better. Have around two or three ‘chapters’ an episode.
But with Dreamworks behind the project it should still be good.
This is great news- it’s a great game and I’m hoping that if it does well we may even get a sequel/spinoff based on Tail Feathers.
Cosmic Encounter or Galaxy Truckers would both be fun done by the Jim Henson Company
Cosmic Encounter in the style of Dark Crystal, and Galaxy Truckers in the style of Fraggle Rock
Holy crap that’s insane! In a good way. For a big company to see potential in a board/hobby style game like this speaks volumes.
It could change our/this industry too.
Totaly forgot to mention Shadows of Brimstone for a movie adaption.
My daughters and me are looking forward to finishing the first campaign book this winter. During the cold months there is usually more time for board gaming. And they were very excited when I told them about the movie going into production. I think it is a really good idea as the games story ark and setting seem made for a movie script. As for what else I would like to see turned into film? Well I have always wondered why there was no Warhammer 40k cartoon really. Take the Eisenhorn Series for example and apply the style of french… Read more »
This is cool.
Also, I like seeing games that have original settings getting rewarded (as opposed to ‘Middle Earth with the serial numbers filed off”).
Oh wow! I would like to watch it so much! I will be looking forward to appearing this film on tv. I don’t have cinemas in my town and I even use bluetooth transmitter to watch films in good quality without any lags and problems. Fortunately, it works well
