I think the clear acrylic could be the best way, you definitely want to make sure it doesn’t detract from the rest of the work you’re doing. I don’t know if this link will work but the new/upcoming Warhammer 40k Mechanicus has a cool tiling aesthetic that may work well for you?:
That nice glow on the tiles could look really sick.
If it hadn’t been for those half-tiles on the floors you probably could have used that as the grid.
They appear to be big enough for a single terminator anyway.
I wonder if, after you have painted the floor, you used a template to spray either the lines or the + intersection parts of a grid that is the proper size. You could use either a neon green or an orange To get the scan effect. Not too heavy that it takes away from the floor but dark enough you can see and use. You would most likely have to make several templates but there are only 5 or 6 component types I think. The hardest part would those small corridor sections or variable sizes.
The spacehulk boards are probably more functional for maintenance so the new parts can be more Central crew quarter’s an be cleaner/brighter John.
3 ideas
1. Just use the squares already etched into the floor and rescale the game accordingly
2. Make a wooden frame with a string grid and spray through it to create the lines
3. Spray the floor neon, use masking tape to grid it out then spray your floor colour over the tape.
What about painting the grid into the floor with a subtle repetitive pattern? The grooves are already there for a wash to take, starting at the half panel in the corner, you can draw or mask a line down the center or each ‘full’ panel [this could be where it comes apart in function].
This way, each playable square on the grid is made up of 2 half squares. Could even carve into it over mask painting.
