About the Project

Some of my fondest memories of board games hang on one singularly game…. The game of fantasy football – Blood Bowl! Anyone my age may recall the original card standee game, then the version with a polystyrene pitch, all the way up to the current iteration. One thing however has plagued me over the years, my desire to field the Chaos All Stars. Now back in the day, a friend of my brother called “dibs” on the All Stars, and as a result he got to essentially be them through all the different versions of the game. Now back then, none of us could paint – our chosen method / materials was to buy the small Humbrol paints (probably lead lined, and toxic) and then sharpen a matchstick to use as a brush (we were poor!). But for some reason the coach of the All Stars too me seemed like the worst of us in terms of skill. His approach was to paint the lower half red, the top half green, and add a bit of flesh paint for a face or a hand etc. He once did elevate his painting style to incorporate brown if it was so desired. I would look on thinking “I can’t paint, but I could do a better job than that”, now fast forward to the present (well technically we are in the present, what I had done there was rewind to the past) but I digress….and I have decided for no other reason than to right that child hood wrong, to buy, build, paint, and field a Classic All Star team.

I finished 41st out of 69 people, which is an improvement on last year’s Event.

Lost 1 – 0 against a Nurgle Team in the 1st round.

Lost 2 – 0 to a Khemri Team in the 2nd round – even my opponent admitted that it wasn’t a fair result.

Won 2 – 1 against an Orc Team in the 3rd round

Drew 1 – 1 against a Khorne team in the 4th round – this game raised much hilarity with me across the space of about 3 turns managing to roll consecutive Double 1’s and using up my 3 re-rolls

Won 2 – 1 against a Dwarf team in the 5th round.

The tournament overall was won by a Black Orc team, undefeated across the 5 games with a record of WDWWD.

A lot of Orc team’s this year, and about 4 of them finished in the Top 10.

Lot’s of Khorne team’s as well (after Khorne won last year) none of which did very well.

Also 2 Vampire teams turned up, but didn’t crack top 20. Highest placed one was 28th.

Really enjoyed this year, everyone I played or spoke to were an absolute delight, and going in I was thinking I won’t be returning next year, but after the interactions and my performance, I think it’s fair to say “sign me up for 2024 already!”.

So, everything I was waiting for has arrived.

I have hacked and slashed my way through the human players and the skaven player.

I have used some spare Khorne Blood Bowl heads (chopping off the horns so they look a little different). I have used a few spare Norse Blood Bowl heads – again chopping off some of the horns.

I also opened up my Dungeon Bowl box to use the Dark Elf and the Skaven from there. I hacked away at the Skaven lineman to make space for the second head – using the Skaven Thrower head.

Then for the humans, I have scraped away the breast plates on them to make space for a Skull – which I cut in half, and then wrapped chains around them.

I hacked off an arm and remade that using Green Stuff World’s tentacle roller (which I need to glue back on).

My BB3 Chaos Renegades actually have the skull chain combo  as well – so its a neat little nod to that.

Painting wise – I was torn between doing a black colour scheme with white flames to give a nod to Newcastle sports teams, but looking at Blood Bowl 2nd edition I couldn’t help but decide to paint them like the original All Stars.

Colour scheme this time around is different in the sense that my cobbled together team below is more like Phil Lewis’ 88 team – more pink then red flames and a lighter green.

This team uses Kabalite Green with Sybarite Green Highlights and washed with Coelia Greenshade.

The flames are Khorne Red washed with Agrax Earthshade. I added a bit of Evil Sunz Scarlet – but found this was to big of a contrast so I darkened it all again.

Right, we haven’t really done much with this project since 2020, that is about to change!

Last year I attended the Full Beard Cup at Warhammer World – I used Dark Elves and did quite badly Drew 3 Lost 2 out of the 5 games.

Since then my Blood Bowl exploits have been mainly playing BB3 on the PS4.

I have been running a Chaos Renegades team and doing okish Won 10 lost 7 at this point.

That got me thinking, I can I transfer that to the table top – and if so where?

So, I am pulling together a GW approved Renegades team – and I am basing them on …..yeah you guessed it…. Phil Lewis’ classic 1988 line up! (with a few tweaks).

So here is the planned line up:

Jurgen Daemonfeeder Renegade Human Linemen
Pabst “The Box” Brooks Renegade Human Linemen
Constrictor Atlanson Renegade Human Linemen
Garak Grigolson Renegade Human Linemen
Engel Von Evilstein Renegade Human Linemen
Ruddog Ironhead Renegade Human Linemen
Keft The Despised Renegade Human Thrower
Luxon Hrull Renegade Dark Elf
Sark Four-Eyes Renegade Skaven
Spite Grimgouge Renegade Orc
Bork Bulge-Belly Renegade Troll
Zy-Nox Minotaur
(TBD) Ogre

3 ReRolls.

GW’s new tournament rules mean that as a Tier 2, Renegades get 8 skill points, so I am going to do the following:

Block on 1 Lineman, 1 tentacle, 1 claws, Dark Elf gets Block, and the Skaven gets 2 heads (5 Spp).

the Minotaur gets Block (at 2spp).

1 Spp left. Not sure what to do with the last skill. As I am taking a Thrower I don’t know whether or not to give him Leader for another re-roll, or a passing skill.

If I don’t do that, I dunno whether to go all in on the carnage and give another Lineman Block?

So far when it comes to the mini build, I have chopped up 5 Human Lineman, 1 human thrower, added an extra head to the Skaven Linerat, and glued lots of spikes, chains and skulls onto the Ogre.

Pictures to follow.

I am awaiting the FW Mintour and armoured troll, and an Orc lineman off Ebay.

Step 26 Community Question

One player has continued to elude me over the last 2 years, and that is Duke Luthor Von Hawkfire.

So imagine my surprise when I was watched The BoneHead Podcast on The Youtube, and I heard the name of a blood bowl miniatures company I hadn’t come across before “Hungry Troll” Miniatures.

So I thought I would have a quick look, and low and behold, I came across this guy:

Step 26 Community Question

Sadly it doesn’t have any size listed for him, and although he is a tad thin looking, he would definitely fill the role of the Duke.

Any bought anything from Hungry Troll before? It lists him as being from 2016, so I am guessing he will the correct size for the current edition of Blood Bowl???

Well the holy grail of my Chaos All Stars has finally arrived.

The Duke himself.

Just got to decide whether or not I want to invest 30 quid into the Snake Sanders Heroforge mini I designed, then I can probably rest on this – unless of course (as previously stated) GW release a Chaos All Star team!

Step 25 Current Situation

So, back in Step 21 I talked about using HeroForge to custom print some Chaos All Star Minis.

Well the first of which has arrived, and apart from him being quite heavily primed (I am wishing I removed that and primed himself) he has turned out ok.

Looking at it now, I think for what I was going for, I should have made him a bit thicker.

As a normal Chaos Marauder for BB he looks ok, I just wanted my version of “Acid” Scarred Max to be a bit chunkier.

I have included him here with my Rex Farsight – from Impact Miniatures for scale.

If I use HeroForge again, I think custom designing Snake Sanders will be ok as he’s a snake headed mutant so looking slender should work.

But, I may rest on this until I see what / if get’s released for the new Edition of Blood Bowl.

Looking back on almost 2 years of Chaos All Starring (and only having played one game with them!) this has been quite the undertaking and quite the expense ha ha.

Might* have been a lot cheaper to just buy a full Chaos Pact team from one of the other companies and be done with it!

*to note it would have been considerably cheaper!

So, my Chaos Star Players from Willy Miniatures arrived, and the current “situation” means I have a bit more time to get to work on them (in between The Horus Hersey stuff I am painting).

First up and a current WIP Grashnak Blackhoof.

I like the way the Chaos symbol has come out, but am regretting going flat black on the skin, deciding whether to highlight up using blues or greys.

Going to try and get him finished this week.

UPDATE

Now he is starting to come together.

Opted to dry brush the skin with Dark Reaper then Thunderhawk Blue.

Still need to get a better picture in some natural light!

Well, after nearly 2 years in the making, The All Stars finally played a match!

Line Up:

  • Rex Farsight
  • Lewdgrip Whiparm
  • Morg’N’Thorg
  • “Constrictor” Atlanson
  • Jurgen Demonfeeder
  • V’Hnn Qllss Zzchhtrr
  • Dirty Dan
  • Bork Bulge-Belly
  • Sark Four-Eyes
  • Zy-Nox
  • Spider Smith
  • Luxon Hrull
  • Engel Von Evilstein

In their debut match, they defeated The Gouged Eye 2:0.

Highlights included V’hnn making a blitz against the orc thrower scattering the ball loose for Sark Four-Eyes to pick it up and run into the endzone.

Rex Farsight also scoring a running touchdown, after having failed a pass to Luxon Hrull, and Morg’N’Thorg running rampant.

Morg managed to K’O 3 Orc lineman, and killed an Orc Blitzer.

Lowlights of the match Bork Bulge-Belly constantly failing his Really Stupid test, and Zy-Nox being unable to do more than push back an Orc Lineman for half the game.

What this proved to me is that my brother’s friend (From the original blog post) who “owned” the All-Stars was not only unable to paint them properly, but also didn’t know how to coach them!

Next up, The Chaos All-Stars take to the field against some High Elves.

Morg for the win!!!

So, a couple of things, first off I started this in 2018 and here we are in 2020 and I still am not satisfied with the squad!

Secondly word has come through that Willy Miniatures are shipping my Chaos Star Players I bought in their Chaos Team Kickstarter. So we should see a few more players turn up over the next few weeks.

However, when researching the fluff of the All Stars, there are a quite a few other names that I cannot get players for:

  • Acid Scarred Max
  • Snake Sanders
  • Pabst “the Box” Brook
  • Garak Grigolson

Are a few All Star Players that exist as both pics or figures that GW produced, or were part of the Phil Lewis team.

So what I have been playing about with time I wait, is the HeroForge site. This has enabled me to at least get an idea of how possible it might be to customize some minis to represent these characters.

My issue however (as ever) is getting them the right size to blend in with the rest of the team.

Acid Scarred Max - ComparisonAcid Scarred Max - Comparison
Snake Sanders - ComparisonSnake Sanders - Comparison
Pabst Pabst "The Box" Brook - Comparison

So, I am going to spend a little bit of time asking some questions, doing some research to see what sort of height I need to set these guys at so they don’t look too silly!

**UPDATE**

I forgot to respond to this at the time, but @drisco13 mentioned in a comment that he thought Pabst “The Box” Brook was actually Galem Goreblade.

Pabst first got a mention in second edition 1988

Step 21 - 2020 sees us getting experimental

From left to right

Snake Sanders

Rex Farsight

Morg’N’Thorg

Pabst “The Box” Brook

“Constrictor” Atlanson

I can see the confusion however as Galem Goreblade looks like this:

Step 21 - 2020 sees us getting experimental

But he didn’t debut until 1989.

and If I was going to custom make him, he would look a bit like this ha ha.

Thanks for the feedback! and I hope your CAS team is going great!

Way back when in Step 14, I mentioned how I had backed Willy Miniatures kickstarter for their resin Chaos team, only to obtain some more Chaos Star Player miniatures.

Well needless to say those still haven’t arrived (which is odd because the Vampire Resin Team I bought from them turned up ages ago – but that is another story)…..So time I have been awaiting my Chaos players, I started having a nose around the internet on various Blood Bowl sites and found names of other All Star players.

Acid Scarred Max

Ruddog Ironhead

Rex Farsight

Spider Smith

to name but a few. Well after searching for awhile, I found a forum that mentioned that for some Unofficial Blood Bowl tournament a number of custom miniatures had been created and given away. This of course lead me down a rabbit hole, where I found a whole Chaos All Star team for sale on Ebay, using a combination of casts from Phil Lewis’ original All Star Players, and some others who have been created more recently (I think the last one I found was from 2015 – 2016).

From there I found a company called Impact Miniatures who sell at rather generous prices casts of some of these figures.

The only issue being size – Phil’s team were 28mm and the current Blood Bowl minis are closer to 32mm.

Any who, long story – somewhat shorter, I have bought some!

I currently have a Rex Farsight, V’hnn “Snakey” Qllss Zzchhtrr, Ruddog Ironhead, and Spider Smith.

However Spider Smith is quite small (I think that one we can get away with) but Ruddog Ironhead looks tiny in comparison to everyone else – although he was meant to be larger. There is another one of him kicking about on Ebay at the moment so if i can get definite news of him being 32mm i may buy him again.

I have attached some pics of what the minis look like, these aren’t my versions however, so far all I have done is glue them together and base coat them.

More to follow when the true work begins!

*UPDATE * The very nice people at Impact Miniatures have actually sent me a replacement Ruddog Ironhead at 32 mm scale – at no extra cost! Which is jolyl decent of them.

One of our earliest miniatures for this project, was a proxy Lord Borak figure.

However last month at UK BoardGames Expo, I was able to pick up the ForgeWorld miniature.

Big debate around this, do you paint your star players in their individual colours? Or opt for your team colours?

I decided to go team on this one.

Well, time I am awaiting the Willy Minatures Chaos 2.0 PM to open so I can snag a few extra Chaos star players, I have been contemplating adding a Nurgle Bloater to the team just for fun.

Then today I sat down to watch The Weekender and my eye was caught by the Rampart Kickstarter – Rampart: Magnetized Modular Terrain for Tabletop, via @Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1915792245/rampart-magnetized-modular-terrain-for-tabletop

I am so tempted to get in on this to use the Gothic scenery as the walls of a Blood Bowl stadium!

I only this week picked up the Chaos Themed pitch, so my mind is a wash with how that could all go together!

I have 3 days to talk myself our of this!

Thoughts!?!

Step 15

I regret marking this project as complete because I am beginning to think it never well be!

While I am awaiting either Forgeworld to release some Chaos Star Players, or Willy Minatures to open their pledge manager, I have been looking about seeing what additional stuff I can add to the All Stars.

I am currently bidding on a Chaos themed pitch on ebay, and have picked up some of the DoomLord tokens / balls etc.

I also saw these on Forgeworld, so I think when payday rolls around I shall be picking up a set of Chaos Cheerleaders!

Going to have to do a bit of research on how they have done the bases as I really like this look.

Step 14....

Yeah, I know my previous update was entitled “Step 13 – The End”, but to quote John Rambo “NOTHING, NOTHING Is over!”.

I allueded to the fact that Willy Minatures have a Kickstarter up at the moment for their Chaos Team 2.0 (they also have a Human Team which look pretty nice as well), I have decided to pledge a Euro (payday is few days away!) before the kickstarter closes to get access to the PM when it opens.

Time I await Forge World releasing the extra Chaos Star Players, I have my eyes on these 3, which I think will do very nicely as proxy miniatures for Withergrasp Doubledrool, Goobler Grimlich and the Khorne Chaos spawn guy whose name escapes me.

These aren’t due to arrive until March 2019, so what I am saying is that there maybe a Chaos All Star Project 2019 launching early next year!

Especially if Forge World get some star players out in the meantime.

If you have an interest in all things Chaotic and prepared to wait, I recommend checking out the Kickstarter – I think it closes tomorrow.

Finally completed here are some pics of The All Stars in all their Gory – sorry Glory!

Next steps – well Willy Minatures have a Chaos Team Kickstarter going that features a lot of cool looking star players. We wait to see what Forge World produce for the current crop of Star Players that are out there.

But in the meantime, I am going to see if I can get these bad boys to the table

One guy left.

And I really cannot track down a player to fill the role of Duke Luthor Von Hawkfire.

I eventually after much soul searching – yes I really am that invested in this now! Opt for a Doom Lord.

largely because I can get one for 4 quid off ebay.

It’s the closet I can get to the look of Von Hawkfire, well at least the helmet is!
