I find that 8 man teams is a kind of sweet spot for me. Theres enough fodder to protect the LMG while not being to bully or expensive.
Tactically / historically the most realistic as well. Some armies add a third fireteam to the squad for a really big force in real life, USMC is an example that usually as three fireteams of four + a squadleader = 13 men. This is an abnormally large squad, though.

For all “level playing field” is an excruciating pun, it’s very true. TBH this period of the war is much more interesting than mine. Crap tanks on both sides, rather than “rock-paper-scissors” around the German big cats.
Many many MANY WW2 gamers prefer early and mid-war WW2 just for this very reason.

I am always afraid of fielding small teams esp. when I have the opportunity to assault.
I always like to take full strength squads, but I wish I could give them seperate orders like the riflemen maneuver while the LMG fires
5 men squads is really quite risky, because as a single unit it can more easily be taken out. However, with more smaller units you have more dice in the bag and you are more likely to grab the initiative and dictate what´s going on on the battlefield.

I’ve always feet this is why @johnlyons and I work well together as a team, without stepping on each other’s toes. Yes, we’re both “historical experts,” but whereas I focus on larger tactical or operational history, OOBs, doctrines, and campaigns, he drills down into the technical and tactical details of the individual tanks and weapons.
That, and he’s forgotten more about hobby that I’ll ever know. 😀
