Modelling With The Boot Campers: The German Afrika Korps

The armies of the German Afrika Korps have fallen behind the British in terms of speed of assembly, but our Boot Campers have a few tricks up their sleeves for them.

Andy has already broken out his brushes and started painting, while Mick gives us some tips on basing Warlord’s metal booster pack miniatures.

Hint for all future boot campers – bring a few metres of barbed wire to keep annoying camera crews at bay while you assemble your forces

Woodfiller for the base.
I have to try that.

Love the wood filler idea! Really simplifies the process. I also love the colors he went with on the German troops.

the glue from hot-glue-guns works similarly becaus it doesnt dry out flat and can be moleded “up” to the base of a mini. also there is the german “pritt- alleskleber” which seems to be some kind of plastic-whatever-when-dry which is excellent for basing with sand. it take the sand and really locks it down. best thing: doesnt dry out much and is a lot more on the plastic side of things > easy painting and washing

It wouldn’t matter which I was building, I would still be dead slow. It takes me forever to build and paint up a unit, much less an army.

Oh, and I’ve used wood filler as basing for years. It works a treat.

Hey, German players are just very particular about our models, Quality over Quantity haha

I’ve used wood filler and filler for basing, then whilst its still wet use a small stone to make impressions in it to roughen it up a little

washes are the fast painters friend. get a good selection of them, stick to 2 atmost according to colours used. base colour your mini > wash aways > 40 minis in 5hrs no problemo

If you play germans you must get used to saying ‘NEIN!’

I’ll have to try the wood filler too for basing ….I do a similar thing with wall filler, but maybe the wood filler would set quicker?

I love the Mortar with the modeled base with those little rubble or terrain pieces on it.

I guess the Germans are slow due to the logistics of getting stuff from Germany to north Africa through Italy, and you know what the Italian post is like! 😉

One thing I’ve found when basing up those Warlord minis with “biscuits” at the bottom is to simply file the top edges down so that they don’t have a hard edge. Then when you add the basing material to fill out the base you don’t get those hard edges showing if you missed a bit. It’s a 30 sec job on each mini, and well worth taking the time to do so

Plastic wood filler, that will probably work better than the spackle I have been using. Off to Lowe’s to spend more money for project stuff.
