Space Marines & Aeldari Clash In New Wake The Dead 40K Set + New Kill Teams!
September 24, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop is exploring new clashes in Warhammer 40,000 as the Space Marines fight against the Aeldari in Wake The Dead.
This new set provides you with the rules for the newest edition of Warhammer 40,000 plus two armies to get started with. On the one side, we have Primaris Space Marines led by the new plastic Primaris Lieutenant.
The wild riders of Saim-hann are led by this Spirit Seer. Wake The Dead is another tale in the unfolding campaign across Vigilus, building on the clashes that have already happened and weaving a new narrative through the campaign book that comes in the set.
These new models would make a good focal point for the start of a Warhammer 40,000 army but I think it would be a neat way to play out some skirmish games in Kill Team instead. You could use the characters as alternative 'commander' figures in your Kill Team and them throw in some cool Guardian and Primaris support alongside them.
The Ancient & The New Join Kill Team
As well as this new box for Warhammer 40,000 we also have two new Kill Team sets. The first if for the (relatively) new kids on the block, the T'au.
Advance Team Starpulse offers up a new set of Fire Warriors alongside their Drones, ready to strike at the enemy. As with all of these sets, the kit comes with the models you need for the warband, a selection of statistic cards and such PLUS a scenario to play out as well.
These T'au warriors will be going up against the Necrons of The Exalted Scythe.
This is a very heavy duty looking Kill Team complete with long-range sniper weapons AND weapons that could shred through armour and buildings with ease. Much like with the T'au set you get all of the accessories you need to play the Necrons PLUS a scenario too.
Will you be snapping up these new Kill Teams, or maybe you fancy a start in Warhammer 40,000?

Wonder if these “double” sets for 40K are replacing the old “Start Collecting” boxes from GW (they do seem to be putting these things out what with this, Tooth and Claw and the beginner 40K box)?
There is a!so Forgebane which is Necrons Vs Skitarrii.
These boxes must be fast to get ready. Two mini codex, a few scenarios, the rules leaflet and sprues they already have lying around. Some new box art and they’re done.
I’d imagine they’ll keep both. I think the model is ‘kits that have paid for themselves’ go into Start Collecting and these dual kits create a really nice way to collect two armies.
I think it’s a great idea!
I think it’s more of an alternative starting point to the big box.
With this one you could use it as an upgrade to your existing spacemarine and eldar forces.
We are still missing plastic Eldar Aspect Warrior kits so of course Eldar get Guardians and Wraith Guard since those are pretty much they options for plastic infantry kits. Space Marines half being Primaris doesn’t surprise me either since GW keeps pushing those which is shame because even more options for beginning players would be nice.
Looking forward to when they give AoS this treatment. I got Blightwar and it was a brilliant box with a fun narrative campaign that made me really fall in love with the characters. If they start putting out multiple sets like this I’ll be in line for all of them.
It’s a lazy boxset no question. 3 out of 8 of the units are on my shopping list and if the price of the previous two is a guide then this will still be cheaper than buying them separately. Auto-buy from that perspective.
I would agree with others. The Eldar are really starting to suffer as an army due to their model range. While they have a lot of “cool” options in plastic (most FA, HS and Troop units), a huge portion of their model range which should compose their army (the Aspect Warriors) are mostly all finecast. Its something like 7-8 different unit entries (Shining Spears, Warp Spiders, Swooping Hawks, Fire Dragons, Striking Scorpions, Banshees, Dark Reapers, Rangers). Additionally – One of two “primary” troop units, the guardians, are a 20-year old plastic kit that is really showing its age. They are… Read more »
I’m hoping that once all the codex books are out, we start to see updates to existing armies and some new crazy stuff like we have seen with AoS.
Getting everyone a codex has certainly eaten into 40k releases, but hopefully once that foundation is in place we start to see some interesting stuff (please no more Nurgle).
It is weird seeing not a single new model for the aspect warriors.
Some of them are web-exclusives too so good luck finding those swooping hawks in a shop …
OTOH … aren’t the aspect warriors supposed to be elites ?
Not the kind of soldier you’d expect to see in great numbers in any army.
Two things: 1) They are, and aren’t, elites. In terms of the old 40k FOCs, Aspect Warriors existed in almost every slot. Scorpions, Banshees, and Fire Dragons were Elites. Dire Avengers were troops. Hawks, Spiders, Spears, and Crimson Hunters were FA, Reapers were Heavy Support. They were “elite” in terms of being very highly trained and specialist soldiers. 2) The Eldar army are, in many ways, the polar opposite of Imperial armies. Imperial armies of usually designed around a standard template unit, that is good at many things, but fantastic at nothing. A Space marine Squad with Missile Launcher, Flamer,… Read more »
I definitely agree that the killteam selection for Eldar is odd (to say the least).
I’m not even sure if the ‘kill team’ aspect is something the Eldar would do, because in a way their armies are ‘kill teams’ as they tend to be a mobile force chosen for a specific task.
Space Marines are the same way, but it seems easy to justify throwing a space marine kill team out there.
But what they’re doing is sending fresh draftees to do a job that should be given to Seal Team 6.
Spacemarines are pretty much veteran or at very least superior to standard humans.
The Eldar army is more like a combo of Spacemarines and Imperial Guard with the Guard being used in Killteams …
They look like Eldar 🙂
They look like Eldar.
They play like Eldar.
I’m calling them Eldar.
And no amount of marketing is going to make me use that awful new name GW is trying to push.
Great to see more set’s coming out.
Yes, that really would be great.
